What the ♥♥♥♥ is the point of giving you infinite lives? this is why games nowadays suck gameplay-wise... nothing at stake, no challenge. You can go watch a movie if you don't want to overcome any obstacles to have fun.
You don't have to be alone for it to be a bad argument. It's a PvE game and as long as it doesn't impact the ladder standings or allow for co-op griefing it shouldn't matter what an individual who paid for the game wants to do with it.
You think you should decide for other people who have spent money how they can enjoy a video game that has no impact on you? (which in it's original arcade state HAS unlimited continues via operator switch or quarters).
The fact that XCOM has an easy difficulty as well as iron man classic does not diminish the challenge of beating it on the latter setting. The fact that other people play it on easy doesn't take away from my experience. You keep repeating that it ruins the challenge, but you don't explain how it does if you don't use the option.
But I'm out of this discussion now, I'm glad they limited credits for this release (and set it to a fair number) and I know others are too. As I've said I wouldn't mind a cheat code, but I hope they don't mess up the game for all of us just because some people want infinite credits.
But I doubt they will, since they actually did limit credits, and it didn't change during the beta phase.
What does it matter if it's a code vs a toggle in the options menu?
I am trying to understand, but this is really irrational to me.
It is the one/only/definite challenge in most arcade games, because they are pay to win otherwise - if you brought enough cash that is (which is very crucial to realize when you talk about "challenge", especially when compared to titles specifically made for "home operation").
The only "measure" of skill in arcade games with the exception of fighting games (when you compete against other players in 1on1 battles) is either score or 1CCing it.
If you want further proof of this, please visit the Ikaruga forums (recently released on Steam).
That game doesn't even record score if you put in more than one credit, haha!
Just my 2 cents on this - I would agree with you if this was about lives, infinite lives would break MS3, infinite credits / freeplay however do not.
It's not uncommon that arcade ports with unlimited credits gets criticized because of it. This is not something I made up myself. Unlimited credits detract from the game.
Of course most arcade games were "winnable" with enough cash, but the same is not true for the home versions. And despite the origins, these games are very much possible to play this way.
