And yeah, mashing hurts after a short while.
each guns shoot differently, mostly used is heavy machine gun, laser & any type of device weaponries do not require tapping (a button press will release a period of shooting).
alternatively, basic gun could be tapped, but only really useful (make things easier) on last mission (meteors & falling walls).
on the otherside, rocket launcher, shotgun & flamethrower are too valuable to be auto-fired
but that's probably me, pretty sure there are alot of non-veteran sluggers which love to get an autofire option
unless, you or any other guy can reach the world records score by playing autofire, but ofcourse you cant, which make your argument invalid
hmm I dont see anyone saying that autofiring is cheating, not sure what make you say that.
but this game was first invented on arcade (neogeo) which originally do not have autofire on it, so people who plays this game out of arcade-nostalgia would feel significantly different when the "button mashing" is removed.
On the point of world record holding and such. Western countries seem to be pretty hardcore about system defaults for no real reason than it (maybe) sounds more impressive on paper. Japan is a whole lot more lax with the criteria and auto-fire is usually perfectly acceptable in games. So I guess go with whatever you want, doesnt really matter as long as you're having fun with it!
And yea the original Neo game machines had dip switches/bio menus you could set to enable auto fire I believe. Certainly wasn't a default or common thing, but I imagine a few arcade owners had it on.
It does have one flaw tho: Since the game has heavy slowdown with huge numbers of projectiles on the screen, holding down the button with autofire can result in a slower overall experience, especially on the flying level - it slows down a lot with tons of projectiles.
