Take for example the old Teenage mutant ninja turtles arcade or the simpsons arcade. You play with 1 player. There is X enemies on screen. Two players results in 2*X. (maybe not exactly that but you get the idea)
Doing this for metal slug would result in absolute chaos on the screen.
