Stuck on Stage 3

I'm not sure if this is a glitch or if I'm overlooking something obvious. I never played the arcade game, or any version before the Steam version.

Whether playing single player or coop, I / we get to the part in stage 3 where we've gone up elevators twice and there are 3 soldiers with bazookas below us shooting up at us. Then we simply run around on the same screen above those 3 soldiers until we die.

There are no elevators to the left or right side of the screen, and no way to exit this screen or this floor (as far as I can determine). We can't seem to harm the solidiers below us because we can't shoot downward, nor can we throw grenades downward. I'm not seeing anything that we can blow up or interact with in any way on the screen/floor where we're stuck.

What am I missing?

You can shoot downward while jumping. Jump and press down while in air.

Thanks! My daughter figured this out about 10 min after I posted. And from that point on we were too busy playing the game again to post. :-)
