Not needing to convert mana to play cards

Hi, I just unlocked the Barbarian and I'm really confused why I don't need to convert the grey stars to red or green mana to use my stone axe card. The stone axe card requires green or red mana to play looking at the card, but I have none, but it still works?? Maybe an upgrade I didn't read or something? I've been looking in the upgrade tree and not seen anything so far.

it's a wild card, you can play it by using your health
but barbarians have this passive where instead of losing health directly you get a poison like debuff

Note that all red-mana characters share this passive. Even Pro, whoso starting cards use the shield everyone else does instead of being able to remove it.
