In there, open the file config.txt with any text editor.
Look for an entry called "shaders"
Make sure that this line says:
"shaders: true"
Overgrowth has no shader fallback as of now. If you disable shaders because you want better performance the game will crash.
If that isn't the case you'd have to tell us what sort of graphics card you have. If you have a laptop with an integrated and a dedicated (more powerful) graphics card, make sure that the game is run with the dedicated graphics card. You can do that by right clicking the desktop shortcut and then selecting "Run with graphics processor." In that list, select the dedicated graphics card.
You get two free games with Overgrowth:
Receiver and Low Light Combat. LLC is not on Steam, but you can redeem it on the Humble Store.
