Overgrowth

Overgrowth

Did development begin in 2005?
Hello,

I remember playing Lugaru almost 10 years ago and then I read about Lugaru 2 which started development shortly after Lugaru 1 was released.

Is Lugaru 2 the same as Overgrowth that began development back in 2005?

It's the same game, but development began in 2008.

No.

Wolfire knew pretty early on that they wanted to make a sequel. But development started in 2008.

Actually from what I just read (http://blog.wolfire.com/page/190),
Lugaru 1 was released in January 2005 shortly after the release the work on Lugaru 2 was announced. In September 2008 it was announced that they have a new team and that Overgrowth is the new Lugaru 2.
So in a sense, the work on overgrowth originated back in 2005, but in 2008 a bigger team continued the work under a new name.

They started work on Lugaru 2 in 2005, but all of that code was completely scrapped, and Overgrowth was written completely from scratch, starting in 2008. The only similarities between Lugaru 2 and Overgrowth is the location of the story (Island(s) of Lugaru) and one of the main characters. They are calling Overgrowth a "spiritual" successor, because it has a lot of the same feel as the first game, but may or may not be directly related to Lugaru (still to be determined).

Ah, okay, then I was misinformed. I thought they just changed the name at some point to dissociate the game from the Lugaru story :)

So this game started development in 2008.

It's been in development for 6 years and this is all they have managed to do?

6 years and the modding community is providing content because the devs can't.

Yeah, popped in because it looked interesting but I don't fancy waiting another 6 years before they start adding depth to the game. I'll pass.

Sigh, do you really believe yourself what you are writing?

"this is all they have managed to do"
They are making an unique and great game from scratch with 2 people working on the actual game. Not finished at this point, but still AAA quality. I don't think such a small team made a game with this high of a quality before. Normally dozens of people work on games like this (and still need many years).

Have a look at the update videos of the last 4 years and tell me again that "this is all they have managed to do": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pT5vrL1LPU&index=128&list=PLA17B3FAA1DA374F3

(Sadly the playlist is in the wrong order)

"6 years and the modding community is providing content because the devs can't."
The community does not provide content because the devs can't. The community provides content because it can. Not many games have such a great editor.

"Yeah, popped in because it looked interesting but I don't fancy waiting another 6 years before they start adding depth to the game. I'll pass."
So what, then don't buy it. They even say it themselves on the Store page: IF YOU WANT A FULL GAME DO NOT BUY IT YET. Early Access is for people who want to support the devs in creating the game and test new alphas when they are released.
