Overgrowth

Anyone else really liked Lugaru's story?
Idk, I feel like it was genuinely really dark and tragic whereas Overgrowth's campaign was just edgy anime MC nonsense. What's even more annoying is they changed Turner's dialogue in Overgrowth's Lugaru Campaign to be more edgy and sadistic than the original game.

Also the main menu music combined with the background in Lugaru was absolutely haunting.

Gameplay is mostly better in Overgrowth though of course, minus a few missing features from Lugaru

I played Lugaru way in the past with the expectation that it's Lugaru but with more features.

Got disappointed in the end.
Actually, I think both stories (Lugaru and Overgrowth) are not their strongest point. Obviously it is the gameplay, but at the moment it seems outdated.
The story in both versions, Turner is a character with a lazy personality, at the beginning he just wanted revenge and then at the end he says that revenge is bad. His ego is bigger than his abilities which makes me a little frustrating to read (You know, there's no voice acting or anything).
The innovative thing about Overgrowth was mainly the blood system that is not normally seen in fighting and fencing games, it is also well designed for the game itself.

Pretty much...he's a flawless mary sue with no personality who's family was killed for the purpose of an extremely straightforward revenge plot. IMO they shouldn't have even done a story if all they were going to do was this again, since they already did it with lugaru. There is so much potential in the setting that is just completely unused. You can play as rats, cats, dogs and wolves and yet the only character we control in the entire campaign is the rabbit on his one dimensional story path.

I fully agree with everything you wrote, even your personal opinion.

The campaign is totally a disappointment just like you said. The character does not show any emotions, mental problems or trauma when all his family and friends are murdered.
He's just like: "Oh, they killed my family, I'll get revenge." Practically the whole campaign is a total excuse to kill.
At the end of the Lugaru campaign I found it disgusting that Turner kills the wolf pups in cold blood and then he proceeds to taunt the Alpha Wolf.
Obviously you can create a well-done revenge story, but if you have no idea how to make one, practically do not do it if you want to avoid the risk that someone will use the story as an excuse to put a negative review or not buy it outright.
About the potential, you already said it for me.
Adding that in the map editor there are too many weapons that are not in the campaign.
Also, the game is left to the modders' hands, and it's sad because they seem to have worked better on new weapons than the original developers.
An idea that they would have made in the campaign to expand it and if they use the races, it would be:
Rats could have more agility and speed in stealth missions.
Cats could be faster in parkour murder and escape missions.
Dogs are fine by themselves, they are warriors. They jump little, they are not stealthy but they are strong.
So yeah, giving ideas is useless as devs seem disinterested in continuing Overgrowth.

This specifically is what I was thinking of in my original post when I said "they changed Turner's dialogue in Overgrowth's Lugaru Campaign to be more edgy and sadistic than the original game." Not sure if you've played the original Lugaru but in that game Turner was a bit less of a psychopath lmao, he actually shows some regret for his actions but he's so numb that in the end he's decided he doesn't really care. Still a pretty one-dimensional character but at least he's self-aware.

Another bit of dialogue taken out from the original Lugaru is the Alpha Wolf explaining that without them, the rabbits would overpopulate the island and suffer for it, which I thought was a pretty interesting moral dilemma that just vanished into thin air in Overgrowth's version.

I already played Lugaru, yea.
I think it's a 2006 game. I played it in 2012 but still the ending of Lugaru is quite strange and souless. There are other games like "Mass Effect 1" that have a similar antagonist who wants to exterminate the protagonist's species because they are "A plague".
Still, I think I get your point, and I agree that in Overgrowth they did a very bad character change. Turner was not a jerk in Lugaru but I don't see his story like something well-made anyways.
But yeah, I think I saw a Lugaru remake in Overgrowth Steam Workshop a long time ago.
