How to get split screen to work?

Bought this game because split screen was advertised, coming up on the two hour mark still don't have a clue on how to get it to work. Why is it complicated? Maybe a simple button on the menu interface? Went into the options and selected the split screen always coop options and they do not work. Anyone have any ideas?

It's kinda inconvenient but take a look at this video:

It shows you how to make characters playable. Just leave two characters with a green box (instead of unsetting the original player) and you're good to go.

Do you have to set it up? I was hoping to just go into an arena map, the other person presses A or Start and we're good lmao.
