especially one that has been Alpha since 2008-2009 lol
It is a story driven, campaign focused, single player melee combat game about ninja rabbits. It is the sequel to David's previous game, Lugaru. Overgrowth is not an open world game, and it is not a pvp game.
The game has switched directions a few times throughout development, and the game was opened to early access before most people even knew what that was, so your confusion is understandable. The direction is very clear and focused now, and has been since just before we entered Beta in January. We're nearing the final stages of release from early access.
If you want a taste of what it is, watch a let's play of the ported Lugaru campaign. That campaign does not represent the final visual quality, length, variety, etc. The new campaign is entirely different - the one in the let's plays is just a port of the old game. It does show what the engine is capable of, and demonstrates how the game will generally play.
lol,.. you give players tools to make open world sandbox levels,.. yet the game isn't open world, nor sand box.. you give players the ability to play arena combat against second player,. yet it isn't pvp,.. then you tell me to look at something that has almost nothing to do with your current game "to look at what the engine can do" well let me say this,.. there are many games made with Unreal4 for instance, some run/look like LifeLess,.. some like PU: Battlegrounds,.. some run and look like What remains of Edith finch.. looking at an engine used in a different game says nothing about one game to the next.. with all of this combined you still say you have direction? this has to be one of the most confusing launches ever lol...
i'll pass on this...
Doom 2016 has an editor. That does not make it an open world sandbox game.
Doom 2016 has a deathmatch mode. That doesn't (necessarily) make it the game's focus. Certainly not in the way that Overwatch or Dota 2 is a PvP game.
If you don't want to play a port of our old game to our new engine, that's fine with me. However, the story driven gameplay is basically the same, just expanded upon. It is entirely related.
It was confusing for a very long time, and I'll give you that. We've figured out how to get a fan base, but we definitely didn't do direction well for a good portion of the development. That's a risk you take with early access, and Wolfire were pioneers in that.
We have now released many screenshots, told people many times in videos, blog posts, twitter, facebook, PCGamer, etc, that we're releasing a new campaign. We have made a teaser trailer. The new campaign is even playable in early access if you want spoilers.
We will do a press launch when we are close to a solid final ship date, instead of a (very small) few months/betas off. You'll see plenty of let's plays, articles, etc.
I definitely don't want to try to sell you my game by having an argument with you, lol :) That's a losing battle.
I am only intending to offer corrections when incorrect information is presented. This perpetuation of incorrect information is what we're fighting now...
The new campaign will be similar in play style, but is already much prettier, more variety (much more platforming, and more explicit stealth), and a bigger story:

For some spoiler screenshots and vids from the new campaign, check Twitter: https://twitter.com/Wolfire/
It's moddable. It includes the prototypes we did for the versus mode and the arena mode. Those are not the main focus of the game upon release, but they are a part of the game.
Great "feel the ninja" game, can't wait to play the full version with the new campagn and then the community levels.
