A few questions, considering purchasing
I've had my eye on this for a while. I'm always on the lookout for better mapmaking tools, and I have a few questions (for other users but if the devs see this and want to weigh in, by all means) before I finally take the plunge on this one because I'm always leery of early-access titles.
• How well has work on this title been progressing? I'm looking at monthly updates so far, which is a huge green flag for me (I'm currently a Dungeon Painter Studio user, I'm sure many of you reading this don't need me to elaborate on that).
• How well optimized is it? One of the main things I'm seeing mentioned in the very few negative reviews is an overall jankieness, which sounds like simple early-access growing pains, but I'm on a fairly low-spec machine currently so any jankieness will be amplified.
• Can you import your own assets yet, and if not is there a plan to add this feature/what is the time frame looking like for that? This is the other main thing I'm seeing mentioned in the few negative reviews, a so-far fairly limited asset pack with no capability of using your own. I saw a post from last November asking about this and the answer at the time was no, but I didn't see anything about whether or not this had changed yet.
• And finally, as someone who has used only Autorealm and Dungeon Painter Studio in the past, how much will I enjoy this? Is it better than either or both of those? Is it possibly worse? Autorealm was free but lacked variety and detail - the maps basically looked like they had been done in MSPaint. Dungeon Painter Studio had the detail I craved but lacked variety again, and then got completely abandoned by the developers for DPS2, a project which they also abandoned. Am I going to be satisfied with this one?

Hi!

I am glad that you are interested in my tool! :)

Btw, I'm working on it alone alongside my full-time job and my family. So it probably takes a bit more time than with other tools, but I'm working on it. :)

For me and my way of working, it makes no difference whether my tool is officially released or labeled as "Early Access". I will continue to work on it even after a release.

In the beginning, only small maps were possible in my tool. Now you can build larger regions and cities. In the beginning, there were also no settings for the graphics quality. You can now reduce the graphics. This makes my tool work better on weaker devices. I'm always working on optimizations. But it's definitely not perfect yet. :)

You can import your own images (this is also possible in the demo). Users are currently using this. You can also find a few custom assets on my discord.
But I have already implemented the Steam Workshop for maps. It is definitely planned to use the Steam Workshop for custom assets as well. There will be an asset editor for this. As simple as possible. I hope there will be a lot of assets from the community.
Over the course of time, I have added assets again and again. The current trailer on the Steam page gives you an orientation.

You can also take a look at this showcase:

Have you tried the demo? Many functions are available there. But there are less objects, paths and plots. No Room Toool, no export and no Steam Workshop. You can also test the performance on your device.

Unfortunately, I don't know Autorealm and Dungeon Painter Studio. I can only recommend you to try the demo of Canvas of Kings and see if you like the way it works. :)

Hannes, I bought your tool because it’s amazing and will help me as an indie developer. Another reason for my purchase was that I identify with you being a solo developer, and I also love that it’s made with Godot. Keep up the great work!
