It's turn based combat and the abilities the characters have are similar to D&D, except warriors have more combat options and mages aren't good at dealing damage. You don't get to freely roam the countryside like you do in the BG games (well BG 1, more than the others). It really is all about the combat, although the combat is varied and imo the best turn based combat I've played in a long time. The story is pretty much on rails, although you do have a fair degree of freedom to do quests in the order you want and explore in chapter 3. There's a demo available that you might want to try.
It's a classless system, like Fallout 1, 2. So apart from the decision of whether your character is a mage or not (mages can cast spells, but have fewer vitality points and their spells fail if they wear metal armor) you can develop them however you want. If you play on the higher difficulty levels you will be somewhat limited in how you build your character as there are only 4 or 5 optimal character paths, and the game is hard enough that you have to be pretty optimized.
No. For the most part you have a set party, but you do a few options with 1 party member. However, once you get your party members you can develop them however you want.

As the helpful poster above says the system is classless but really it isnt as if you dont concentrate and focus your character you will be horribly murdered.
From what ive played so far your given a party and cant pick and choose. And though you can level them how you want, you cant really because they are on a path that if you change you will be horribly murdered.
There are a limited amount of abilities and spells , i have been playing for 10 hours and im still using the 1 same ability on my fighters and archers and the same 3-4 spells on my mages. While again there seem to be choices there arent really because theres abilities and spells that are just clearly much better. So i think you will end up using the same few abilities and spells.
The game is basically about the turn based battles , if you like them you will like the game. There is a very large demo to try , i played it for 4 hours and then bought the game.
My problem with the game is that chapter 1 was fun but now its becoming a bit of a chore , still using the same abilities and spells over and over . And the battle's have become annoying and failure so often comes by uncontrollable luck or lack of it. I plan to carry on playing but i feel myself losing interest due to lack of variety with tactics and frustrating reloads. Hopefully i start enjoying it again.
after 4-6 hours play i would have given it 80% , now after about ten hours its become a 50%.
I'd say no, it's not really all that similar. It's not a bad game, in and of itself (though I can't stand it), but it's definitely not a clone of an infinity engine dnd game.
Think of it as you are at a table, you layout dungeon tiles on the table, then put enemy minitures on the tiles and then your group on the tiles. Then play it out turn by turn. In between each Tile Battle, you get a little story to sew it all together.
