Saving and spending money
I think I'm nearing the end of chapter 1, and I still haven't purchased anything from merchants except for food rations and arrows. This is a habit from various other RPGs, where you often get in a situation where you'll permanently miss out on a powerful item because you're short of money (the item might no longer be available later in the game). Is this the case in Blackguards as well, or is it 'safe' to start spending money?

IMO, if you've saved all that cash the best thing you can do is go back to Neetha and buy the armor set there. It takes most of the money you make in Chapter 1 to do so, but it's one of the best armor sets in the game and you won't get another shot at it until well into Chapter 3.

I remember seeing that armor while playing one of my first characters, but it looks as though it's no longer available in Neetha after applying patch 1.3. I've checked with three new post-patch characters.

Ah, that's unfortunate. If true, the Neethan Axe is a must buy if you have a 2H bashing character (it's always been my first purchase of the game...I don't buy anything until I have the 20G to get it).

Other than that, I don't recall any "must buy" items...you can safely save it for Chapter 2. At that point though, I wouldn't hesitate to start spending. Don't waste it all on potions and such, but you shouldn't have any trouble if you just buy every meaningful piece of armor or weaponry that appears to be an uprgrade.

EDIT: Note that I haven't replayed Chapter 1 since the patch. If the items have been changed as it sounds like they have, there may be another piece of equipment I'm also unaware of that is good in one of the towns. I suspect not though...they probably just took away that armor set because they felt it was OP (or just boring) to give you an armor set so early that one of your characters will very likely wear for the entire rest of the game.

Makes sense, thanks for the advice. The Neethan Axe is still there, however it isn't suitable for any of my characters. The only significant very expensive item is a spell book which costs 250 gold, in a mid-west village. I'll purchase that, and then go for the modest armor upgrades.

Yeah the book is certainly the best idea. Many players quote there's a huge amount of money later but it's just they don't spend any at all but for one item or two like the book. The truth is there isn't much money so you need choose with care what you buy or not.

At the end of chapter 1, you can buy your first heavy armour sets for your warriors although they cost 150 gold per set. If you think you'll be short, sell the spell book you get from the Brotherly Love quest without using it, you can learn that later from a teacher.

Better to spend those AP on healing and cure poison spells anyway.
