havnt use 2h weapons yet, i prefer dual wield fighting. good for combatmaster perk too. you learn slashing weapons in the beginning cause of the torch. for act 1-3 1h swords. for act 4+ daggers (you get 2 special dagger in the end of act 3, 1 wounded 1 poison). the only good 2h swords are in act 3 and 4 the rondracomb should be the best 2h sword, it increases your courage.

The Rondracomb has a much more important feature, it does magic damage rather than slashing. This is important as most enemies have resistance to slashing, but little against magic.

you won't get any useful greatswords until chapter 3 and you can buy a very decent longsword (sword/saber category) in the very first town, so i'd say start with sword & board and up the greatsword skill later in chapter 3. you'll want to (almost) max 3 different melee skills anyway to unlock the weaponmaster trait, so it won't hurt to have both eventually, but 1h swords are the better choice for the first 2 chapters, imo. i only found one weapon in the greatsword category in the first chapter and that was really weak - similar damage to the 1h longsword, but with a penalty to hit and/or parry (don't remember exactly) and without the option of using a shield or offhand weapon.

Two weapon fighting is also viable for chapter one and most of chapter two, if you prefer a mroe offensive option than sword and board.

The downside of focusing on swords is the complete and total lack of late game special weapons. I haven't played through the DLC yet, so that may change. As of right now there are two good spears, two or three good 1h blunts, one good 2h bashing, and one or two good 2h swords (Andergaster may qualify, given the reach and huge damage potential against lightly armored targets). There is a single 1h sword that is marginally better than what you can buy at a blacksmith.
