No its not poorly balanced. You can beat the game with every Class on Hard pretty easy.
The Magic Archer is just the strongest but not the only viable option.
The best class for your MC is a Mage because you will have only 1 or 2 Mages in your Party (depends there you are in the Story).
Magic is very strong and it can change a fight from hard to easy if you have the right spells.
But that doesnt mean you will have a lot of problems if you play a melee as your MC.
My Favourite is Magic and Bow with my MC.
Pick at the Character Creation the expert Mode and learn Magic if you want to use spells.
Put a Range (+arrow/Bolts) and a Melee Weapon on you Char at the Creation.
Read this Guide.

All in all I didn't make a lot of use of magic in my playthrough. My main was a mage / archer and while I did use her fire spell from time to time on those that resisted piercing damage, mainly she was a heal bot as needed.
Z was my main magic thrower with his fire spell and fire balls being very handy. A (2nd half of the game) became more of a crossbow shooter and I used her magic side only once in a while.
It really all depends on where you put the points on how you use your characters. Plus remember that not all monsters will take the same damage; undead resist piercing damage for example so bows, crossbows and spears are worthless.
Mage + bow. lol :) I have to check.
I'm also interested in fighting with two weapons, e.g. two swords.
If you're talking about your main I wouldn't think you'd be able to make enough points to spend on the 3 different area's, since you'll also be spending points on attributes and special talents (willpower and ? to resist wounds and knock downs).
With archers you can just hide behind some poor cover and bombard people in the other side of the map. The optional would be Archer with spells or Warrior with spells.
Mages should have different skills each, beside healing spell. They are great when used correctly as in heal, and CC, buff, with 1-2 damage spells and used as required not spammed. As much as they should have ranged option and not fight, you can make them proficient with staff Z, and dagger A so they can fend for themselves when in trouble.
For warriors, best way to develop them is to continue them on path they start with.
I think the game is well balanced for warriors, everything works, just read in what it does before?
PC can be any role, I suggest Archer, but mage is fine too. If you pick a fighter, you might have harder time. If you don't make an archer, you best transition someone to that role, anyone would do but the dwarf. Mages are best because they can self buff.
Archer is a primary DPS role in this game, he carries team with steady damage delivery.
Best swords, have highest raw damage, but best spear and hammer deal wounds. It's tough with 2h weapons though because of their innate penalty to accuracy, and defence you offset that with a slider, and you are a glass cannon that can still miss a lot against tough enemies RNG. That's why bow is much better to rely on with damage, it gets full accuracy bonus all the time, you don't have to think about it between fights.
It's much better for you if you were using a bow or crossbow instead of a staff, you can not only use piercing arrows but there's also blunt arrows (that can kill undeads) and others that can cause wounds.
Might be a good idea to give Zurbaran and Aurelia a crossbow also, just increase their crossbow level until they are hitting stuff and you'll get yourself a great extra damage dealing that can still cast great buffs / debuffs / healing.
With your main character, you should always pick the ability to cast spells no matter if you'll be using melee or ranged weapons, you can be a healer, debuffer, enhancer.
I don't recommend using attack spells since you can do damage with arrows and save your sp for the 3 types of spell i mentioned, in the first game you don't have stamina, so you can spam skills as much as you want, but SP is kinda of a pain to recover
After you get through the 9 Hordes you'll eventually get a trident spear that does magic damage with good 'hit stats' and after collecting all 9 pieces of Black Metal you'll get the weapon that makes which does Infantry damage, although I found the 'hit stats' (attack, parry etc....) to be such that the trident was the better choice up to end game.
