Sort of.

The rules are lightly modified from what you may have seen in Blade of Destiny/Star Trail/Shadows over Riva/Drakensang/River of Time.

If you're familiar with how DasSchwarzeAuge/TheDarkEye system works, the game will be easier to get into because you'll understand how to build a character who can survive combat.

The game isn't pure DSA/TDE because of the way it generates quests, missions, and experience points, but it's an interesting variant on the system.

It's slightly different from Blackguards 2, and is probably the better of the two games. And there's a cameo appearence by a character from Chains of Satinav/Memoria (which are spectacular Adventure games set in the DSA/TDE universe).

Blackguards 1 is for everyone loving to dig deep into tactical combat. And - yes - at the beginning it might feel really tough if you dont keep a close eye on character planning and a flexible party. My very first party for instance died over and over again when facing the Louse Queen but beating her down after so much pain was one of the most glorious moments in the last years. Even better than killing the final boss. I still have a lot of fun with it and try to experiment with different restrictions to keep up the challenge. However: Have fun! ;o)

This a turn based strategy game, so no this doesn't play like Drakensang. The rules are also different, but you'll notice some similarities. They're set in the same world but in a different area though. I have no idea about the timeline...

No, as l_hamalainen said this is a turn based strategy game.
The battles reminds me XCOM and the rest of the game is similar to a pen&paper D&D.
The only thing blackguards share with Drakensang is the setting.
It's a shame it has so bad reviews, it's a great game although it's not perfect.

No, its a slow turn based game, without as much choice in character and story building going on. Much much slower pace.

I really liked Blackguards but maybe that's because this is the first game like this I've ever played.

Speaking of are there any similar type of games?

Yes. Follow curators like RPGwatch and similar to get a good list. Not many around. But yes there are others.
