Dark Messiah's still best-in-class for first person melee-focused action RPGs. Obviously there's Dishonored, also made by Arkane Studios, but: 1) the combat is nowhere NEAR as good as Dark Messiah and 2) I'm sure you've already played it anyway.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance might just overthrow it, but ya' can't rate what doesn't exist yet (coming: Winter 2015).

Condemned: Criminal Origins is the only other first-person game I can think of with such stellar melee mechanics, but that's a straight-up actioner, and it's set in a grimy, modern day urban jungle. Plus you've probably heard of/played that one anyway, heh.

If you're looking for great THIRD-person melee-focused action RPGs, look no further than Risen 1; some of the best damned melee combat in video game history, imo. Mount and Blade is excellent too. And Dark Souls as well, of course.

Dark Souls 1 and 2. Demon Souls on PS3. Lichdom: Battlemage just came out. Deus Ex. Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Vampire Masquerade Bloodlines. Any of the Wizardry games. The Neverwinter Nights games can be played in 1st person, although you might not want to.

Mount and Blade is excellent too.

I second this. I went on a weeks long Mount and Blade kick this summer and found it to be enthralling.

However, I'm not sure I'd call it an RPG. Its really more like the ultimate medeival sandbox with RPG style stats... There is no story except for the story you make.

For first person RPG along the lines of Arx Fatalis you should look up Ultima Underworld I and II on GoG. It is the game that inspired the rest of the genre, after all.
Looking at the other suggestions I think that Vampire Masquerade: Bloodlines is another first person gem (that can be played 3rd person as well), but I strongly recommend the Wesp unnoficial patch if you try it, since it was basically unplayable on release and the guy has been fixing bugs and adding (useful and interesting) features for the past 9 years.
Oh wow, how could I forget Bloodlines? It's even on Source, the same engine that powers Dark Messiah. Although it's nowhere NEAR as visually impressive as that title.
Why don't you try Ultima Underword?
Arx fatalis was planned to be Underworld so it has similarity with AF.

As an aside, after seeing you guys rave a bit about Dark Messiah I will have to check it out. I was a big fan of the earlier might and magic titles, but after IX I sort of gave up on them. I did not even bother to give Dark Messiah a look at all.
Dark Messiah is a HoMaM title in name only.

A few warnings:
The plot is garbage.
The voice acting is abysmal.
The dialog sounds like it was written by a teenager familiar with nothing but Warhammer 40K books.
Most of the male characters look and sound like they were transported from Masters of the Universe.
Most of the female characters look and sound like they were transported from a XXX feature.

But in spite of this, it's one of my favorite games ever. The combat isn't merely great; it's nothing short of masterful, and the sheer number of options every single combat scenario offers you means the replayability is off the charts.

Here's a quick, spoiler-free gameplay video of someone playing it properly:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anlwdm0HhH0

(note that it's very early-game, before he has much of any different abilities)
It's also the only game outside of Risen, Mount and Blade and Die By The Sword where you can specifically control each and every sword swing.

The game's around 15-20 hours per playthrough depending on difficulty, which is actually a lot for a highly polished FPS (styled) game on Source.

Well, plot itself wasn't that bad I think.
but I'm sure Arcane doesn't have good skill to make story awesome:sweat:

I found Dishonored's plot to be decent, if unspectacular. Far, far better than Dark Messiah.
How about the Thief series?
To ydraig, personally i liked the Dark Messiah plot a lot more than Dishonored. Dark Messiah was more naive and maybe dated, but it was enjoyable, Dishonored on the other hand was bland and boring for me. I finished Dishonored always wondering why the bleep i was playing it cuz i found it to be average/mediocre from begining to the end. Personal taste of course, but i liked Dark Messiah a lot more than Dishonored, including the plot. For me Dishonored is not even in the same league as Dark Messiah.

But still not fun and not impressive.
I agree that Dishonored's plot itself is great but poorly executed.
but DLC's story is near good as Thief series

not many people count Thief series as an RPG but you and me seems like count it as an RPG.

Very hard to define an RPG nowadays, i think its a term that lost its meaning long ago.
Ask ten people what an RPG is and you'll prolly get ten different answers.
I like to draw a sharp line between RPG games, which descend from the P&P, statistic and mathematical systems of D&D and White Wolf IP, aRPG, or "action RPG," which is really what most so-called "RPG's" are today, and finally games that have VERY shallow/superficial statistical mechanisms like Mass Effect 2/3, Gears of War etc, I'd consider to be "action games with leveling mechanics."

So under those definitions: Baldur's Gate is an RPG. Gothic 2 is an aRPG. And Borderlands is an action game with an arbitrary leveling system.

Anyone else agree with this method of categorization?
