For some reason, I return to this game every few years. I'm not sure why; perhaps it is me performing subconscious penance for my sins. Upon returning, I always forget just how terrible the combat can be. I forgot that the "talk" button is the same as picking something up off the ground. I forget how to fly that damn bird.

The combat is one of the worst of any video game ever made, up there with Witcher 1 and 2. But the reason you probably keep coming back is how fun it is to steal everything not nailed down, knock out the owners, and steal from them as well. They forget immediately anyway. I love it.

I have a complete love-hate relationship with the game as well. It is intensely mediocre but the systems are so interesting i keep playing it for an hour or two - hell, the NPCs will follow you if you go where you're not supposed to, attack you if you attack them, this low-grade AA game from a decade ago has more reactivity and whatnot than some games that came out today, but the rest of it is intensely mediocre...

I think it is the whole pirate theme, they went a bit too hard with it - the best pirate game ever is still Sid Meier's Pirates, but this is solid i guess. I will force myself to finish it.
