Dont be fooled by the first few hours.
The game early hours are almost cringe worthy... But if you keep the faith... You will be rewarded!! Once you actually join a faction the game turns around entirely. I joined the goody dark knight faction and feel like a freaking jedi!!! The game went from terribly slugish combat and relying on my weirdo pirate to do the killing for me to turning me into a freaking ninja with dark magic!

Keep the faith .. It gets AWESOME!

I've never seen a game that had more sluggish combat than this game. I'm about an hour in, and I can barely survive a fight against a Scavenger because by the time I take a swing, the Scavenger can get like 3 attacks in. What were they thinking making swings take so long. Every other enemy I've come across attacks 2 or 3 times faster than the PC.

I'm glad to see it changes eventually, because I was about to put this game down and never start it up again.

I for one like the combat mechanics in the Risen games. Slower, require proper timing, great progression system.

This is how the gothic series works - zero to hero. You start off as a total scrub who can barely swing a sword and kill anything then get way better once you gain access to more skills.

One of the challenges is to get through a very unforgiving early game.

I was on the same boat. Once i became a dark teleporting magic wielding dark knight...it all changed. Jedis have nothing on me dude!

Yep, going back and beating the crap out of someone who had beaten the crap out of you when you were a weakling, is one of the things I love about the PB games.

The fact there are actually factions is an improvement over R2 where the 'factions' were meaningless.

Actually I thought the first few hours were pretty damn good too! This is the first Risen game I have actually started playing and I can't get enough, the world feels alive and there's so many things to do.

People weren't kidding when they say you go from nothing to a hero....in the first hour of the game I took on a crocodile and he ate me :( stared at the screen and wondered how the ♥♥♥♥ did a crocodile kill me.

The combat is sluggish the entire game. Once you get training for two perks (parry and speed increase) it improves slighty but doesn't feel satisfying in any way especially once you take on the game's bosses which are unbelieveably annoying.

Please, I want to know your thoughts on Risen 1 & 2 combat.
Since Risen 3 combat is more like a mix of R1 and R2, how is it "sluggish" and "not satisfying" even after two perks?

So which island is this Dark Knight faction on?

You have to level up, go to trainers and pay,etc.. and you can get more moves, etc..

you start off as a very weak person with not many options to attack, go to some towns though and mete some trainers and that changes. The first hour or two is slow yes, but the combat as does the whole game, improves as the game goes. Also the magic is done very well to. Also make sure you join a faction and you get access to even more things.
