What gameplay entertainment value you are looking for depends on your personal preferences. The game isn't flawless, and while some of the things that work well, other things may annoy you. Or not. It isn't known what overall gameplay experience you are looking for.
If you didn't like the pirate aesthetic of the 2nd game you'll be happy because 2 of the 3 factions don't look like that at all and wear heavy armor.
Magic and casting spells is fun and easy to use and each faction has their own style (Voodoo, crystal magic and rune magic)
If you want to feel a lot of Gothic nostalgia I'd recommend joining the Mage Guardians or the Demon Hunters.
The Islands where those factions are based look a lot more like Gothic and its more Medieval themed rather than pirate themed.
The only faction that retained that Pirate aesthetic is the native faction because you end up becoming a Voodoo Pirate.

Exploration is easily the strongest pro in Risen 3 and is a lot of fun. There are quite some neat islands with a lot of hidden loot. Also the faction aspect is great, just what you would expect and very close to Gothic. Hell even the look of the protagonist changes depending on which faction you have chosen, i really liked that. The story is kinda meh, not much to offer but the overall grinding through islands and slaying dozens of monsters to farm up xp and developing your character is really cool. I enjoyed the game. Just grab it on sale if you are unsure and keep in mind you can still go for a refund under 2 hours of playtime.
Don't take this one too seriously and it is even better that way. It's a camp pirate adventure - Captain jack Sparrow meets Conan Barbarian and Tarzan, lol.
Just do the quests, travel around - enjoy the level design, drink rum ;)
I recomend applying the No Bloom / No DOF mod for clearer graphics.
Gothic 1/2 today with their 3D11 patching and texture mods are just fabulous, imo, G2 & its expansion, NoTR, are splendid with their air of mystery and exploration--so much fun. I can play these and still enjoy the heck out of them, so long as I keep a couple of years between replays, that is...;)
If you decide to play these games, then my 100% recommendation is to use the best and most recommended image-quality and texture mods & game patches when doing so. The visual and audible quality of the games (G1/G2) is increased dramatically with latter patches and mods. I'm not one of these who treasures an old game I can hardly see, hear, or play...;) Improving the game demonstrably is what all the game patches and IQ mods and texture upgrades are for! So use them! ...;) Use the D3d11 mods for G1 and G2, without a doubt. Heh...I remember when I owned G1 when it originally shipped, the image quality/resolutions/ and 3d rendering was so poor that I often couldn't see what I was looking at in some scenes...;) Bugs galore...;) And often then, it wasn't always bugs, either, but the 3d APIs were still pretty primitive compared to much later--when the whole 3d gaming "industry" improved by leaps and bounds. G2/NoTR, I think, is my favorite of the Gothics--but play them with the improvements available and they are just as good--and I think in many ways better--than such games today. It's not a rule or anything, it's just that in those days more was done with the story and dialogue and exploration, etc., because a developer just couldn't do what he wanted graphically or even aurally, etc. It's hard to quantify, but there's some kind of charm with G2/NoTR that you don't see much of anymore. It's a classic and a keeper, imo! G3 is different from G1/2. Graphics are better, but the game itself isn't as good, imo. On sale, of course, G3 is a no-brainer.
Getting back to Risen 3....there aren't that many mods for the game (Nexus) but there are a few and a couple of mods are worth having. But the game itself is shaping to be a real "south-sea islands extravaganza." It definitely has that "PB" flavor and stamp...;) But it's also its own game. Right now it seems much better than I thought it was--would ever be! All of the PB games have an individual character and stamp. But even the older ones are great *if* you read up on and install the latest and the best, most-recommended game patches, mods and texture packages! Definitely recommended. Looking at older classics can especially be a fun hobby as even today we usually have to wait awhile for really great games to release!
Its ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ tier rpg BUT its NOT worse than gothic 3
Worst thing for me, no concole commands to sweeten the suffering of just wanting to complete the series.
