FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves

why the low player base?
Im not even baiting, im going to get the game this week. But like i dont understand it, it looks decent and dont have any dumb neutral skip like his competition

Edit: To sum up, it has that playerbase because the franchise is not that known and some weird marketing choices. if you are interested buy it though, its fun af

crossplay

I would worry about that when (IF) I stop getting games in less than thirty seconds, personally.

SNK marketed the game to casuals and people who were never going to buy it in the first place. Putting Ronaldo and Ganacci in the game as base roster and axing important Fatal Fury characters irked a lot of the SNK fans (myself included) who were quite hyped for the game a couple of months ago. SNK invested in the wrong crowd and are paying the price for it.

So, for me at least, the thing keeping me out is the terrible launch roster. I'll definitely pick the game up when they make Nightmare Geese playable, though, as I have no other gripes aside from having to deal with the mockery of Ronaldo and Ganacci online. Game has some real depth to its mechanics and seems quite competitive from what I've seen so far.

COTW is the victim of a smear campaign from the FGC. nonsensical complaints about "negative edge menus" and all of a sudden everyone is an expert on UI coming up with excuses to call the game bad or "heh i'm smart for waiting I will buy this on sale". and of course, somehow a fighting game with full crossplay and good rollback netcode "isn't worth full price".

the game is great, the FGC fails as usual.

Yeah, Most FGC was also crying rivers over Salvatore but now are loving it...
its a snk title, it was never gonna do mainstream fighter numbers no matter how much they put into marketing the game

the issue is that everyone in FGC communities simply repeat over and over making it true. granblu and strive did very well despite being...somewhat simplified games. positive reception from social media matters. I have no issues at all claiming COTW is substantially better than any other fighter out there at the moment.

I can see why you don't understand it if you cite "neutral skips" as a vector by which a game is successful or not. This is most certainly something you picked up from terminally online drones with negative analytical ability and real-world impact.

Show footage of this game to anyone in your life who is not heavily invested into fighting games. Then show them Strive (which peaked at 31k on Steam). You'll get your answer quickly. The game doesn't look like a 60 USD product. That matters way more than anything else.

The topping on the cake is that they spent stupid amounts of money on marketing, prize pools, Ronaldo and the DJ instead of, you know, the actual game. Only to peak lower than KOF15 (8k+). Feels like an execution error, to say the least.

Me, personally, I just don't think the gameplay is that compelling. I got my fill in the beta and, while I had fun for the time I spent on it, I realized I'm not that interested in investing my time long-term into a copy-pasted SF6 inside an SNK engine with mid graphics. I will probably pick it up for $10 later on.

"Smear campaign". lmao The FGC is a blip when it comes to affecting sales. Also, there was nothing unique regarding the conversations around COTW. Pretty much every game has its detractors and critics pre and post release. Every major FGC content creator is on this game right now. The game simply just doesn't have wide appeal to elicit bigger numbers.
Beta 1 was the first nail in the coffin
Beta 2 fixed none of the issues present in Beta 1 outside the matchmaking taking 30 years
Ronaldo announcement put the game straight to the top of the ignore list for many

And the game just doesn't appeal to anyone outside of the fgc sphere

The FGC itself "might be a blip", but the FGC content creators on the youtube algo. do in fact shape public perception. it's partly FGC hating anything that isn't SF, the other is culture war because of saudi backing.

yeah the woke self centered american puritanism could have damaged the game too, especially some famous blonde dude

i can see the game looking like a ps3 hurts but sf6 has mid graphics too and is going crazy
This game is not nearly as "casual" as they are marketing it to be or streamers or reviewers are trying to make it seem. Im pretty overall new to fighting games I can safely say if this was my first experience I would have quit couple hours in. This game is far more punishing then SF imo while not super difficult to start learning combos the difference in recovery timings, speed of the game once things really get going and the defensive mechanics that will make really good players seem even more impossible to open up once they master Just Defend and Hyper defense will off put most "casual" and new players. I think the ppl who bought into pre order for early access is pretty much the "pros/hardcore/long time fans" and those will be the only ppl that stick around long time so the numbers we see now will pretty much be it unless something crazy happens. I actually expected higher to be honest as well but not shocked. I dont think long term this will put a dent or even maybe reach SF in numbers especially with SF coming out on switch 2. That being said Ill continue to play it for awhile I am overall enjoying it enough to keep pushing and learning.

There’s no handholding in this game. It’s extremely hard for casuals. There are players who have barely any wins in ranked and players that have 0 ranked points.
