I am also worried that this game does not cater to casuals and newcomers enough. And I hate to say that because what I find most interesting is the depth and variety of systems implemented. The fact is that the more intermediate crowd (I count myself in) tends to drop games like this fairly quickly when online dies out.
If we had a demo for Fatal Fury I'd be inclined to give it serious chance.
I missed the opportunities. Then again, open betas usually do not do games justice. To really get a solid idea.
Smart Style controls are crap according to some sources I consulted. And neither is this the kind of catering that I find too productive. It more comes down to content (campaigns, presentation, single player game modes, holistic training modes and guidance, unlockables).
Games like FF COTW will remain rather niche with its bare bones amount of content. It focuses on the more seasoned fans and that's fair but I made this experience time and time again with different other games. Titles like these may draw a couple thousand players within the first 2-4 weeks. Then they die.
