I defended Ronaldo as smart but lame, this is DUMB and BAD.

Adding Ronaldo sucked, but it made business sense. Ronaldo is the most popular person on social media and the biggest athlete in the world (outside of USA) right now. The CR7 x CotW trailer has just under 1.2 million views and is already the 12th most watched video on SNK's youtube and will likely break into top 10 by tomorrow with how close it already is to the 10th most watched.

Meanwhile this DJ only has ~450k instagram followers and most of his videos on youtube don't even break a million. He only has 520k youtube followers. He has 570 spotify followers and only gets 55,000 daily streams. For perspective, on a website that ranks most streamed spotify artists the lowest they go is #3000 and that person has 440,000 daily streams. Ronaldo's trailer has already surpassed the majority of Salvatore's videos. FFS you'd have been better off the Hawk Tuah girl.

The animations for the moves look jank, at least Ronaldo's were weird but seemed decent visually and made SOME sense from a physicallity aspect. Salvatore's moves look bad in terms of when the attack is actually considered to have 'hit' vs the time that it looks like it hit. The lack of ANY power behind any of his attacks and simply the fact it's ALL weird. There isn't even like a 'oh his specials are weird" it's all pretty deeply uninterestingly weird. I say this as a person who enjoys weird characters. I even liked Hakan in Street Fighter 4! I play Luigi in smash brothers and he has a vacuum plunger.

This is a bad move and hype seppuku.

Psy would have made more sense and he has been pretty much a dead meme for a decade now but at least he is known everywhere. Gangnam style has 5.5billion views and Psy's appearance on X-Factor Australia has more views than Salvatore's biggest hit. Psy is currently ranked #2397 on current daily streams on spotify and as I said Salvatore doesn't even make the top 3000.

so they're just filling the slots with guests as it gets a bit more publicity

guys need to look at the guest roster in games like mortal kombat, that's filled with celebrities too, it's not a new concept. I mean I'm not crazy for guest characters in general in any fighter, but I understand why they do it

Guest characters are fine, especially when they fit the feel of the game. I mean most of the ones for MK1 would be better in an injustice type game but they still kind of make sense give the hyper violence stuff being core to their identity. Stuff like Leatherface and Jason really fit perfectly into the mortal kombat world.

Real celebrity guests are pushing it HARD. This guy is barely what I'd call a celebrity. I'm a big fan of some bands that I'd hardly call "massive" and they outrank him in popularity. I'm not exactly clamboring for Howlin' Pelle from The Hives or Dave 1 from Chromeo and these artists get 4-5x as many daily listeners and have bigger youtube followings.

If they aren't gonna go full on Steve Aoki, Dave Guetta, Marshmello or Daft Punk then why bother? At least people know who those are (Daft Punk actually has potential to be kind of cool if they incorporated stuff like Tron & Interstella 5555 references, don't want em and it would visually be out of place, but that at least would be mechanically interesting).

Strictly from a business perspective this isn't really adding much in terms of attention, and certainly not POSITIVE attention. He isn't a big enough person and it's not being executed well enough.

As for 'the old garou that haven't returned were crap'? I disagree and also there are also a couple of designs from the unfinished Garou 2 that looked cool. I think one of them got redesigned into Preecha. Also I'm pretty sure people would have been WAY more hyped if it was Duck King who has long been a cult favorite that hasn't returned. Hell, they could have made Salvatore a Duck King skin and people would have been like 'well, at least we got Duck'
