I don't think we've seen enough yet to be either worried or confident that the game will be a masterpiece.
• looks like KoFXIV/V + cell shading (not a compliment)
• far too many and messy VFX (seems to be copying one of the worst aspects of SF6)
• every character looks like they play rather generically; their move-sets and inputs look homogenised (the copy-paste trailers really don't sell the game well either)
• so far, the roster is, at best, mediocre; and given its striking similarities to said KoF games, it may end up just a watered-down version of those [already mediocre] games
• character designs are iffy -- Terry looks distinctly better in SF6, and Mai will likely be too, if not more so (esp. to the eyes of coomers)
• the "Rev" system (lit., a custom comeback meter) is gimmicky and will be used in only an "optimised" manner (my guess: in the last third of the HP bar, because that's where all stealth defence buffs / artificial skill-plateauing shenanigans kick in); certainly, this will be the case in the case of competitive play / e-sports... I'd have taken "lane switching" over "Rev"
• already some concerning (albeit, unsurprising) talk of "accessibility" in the few developer presentations there have been, which does not bode well for either game longevity (shallow fighters die in utero -- see: MK1), and/or FGC scene interest outside of S. America--who would play pick-up sticks if it were made by "SNK"
• cynically, they are already talking about DLC, before the full launch roster is even revealed; much less, before game launch... meaning that the base game will likely be lacking in characters (<20?), like Samshow was; with chars. then divvied for extra investment -- until the sales peter out about six months post-launch, and they abandon the game... again, like they did with Samshow
Overall, there is very little that I've seen that looks particularly promising for the game: From its aesthetic design to gameplay, it all points to a by-the-numbers, process line developed "Neo SNK title"; as distinct from a real homage to the series. Fatal Fury games always played differently than the SF type fighters; with only MotW becoming more generic. Granted, CotW is a sequel to the latter iteration... But, still, with SNK games being so homogenised after being bought up by Tencent and the Saudis, it would have been nice to see something unique for a change. Samshow came close to emulating its forefathers; it just fell at the roster hurdle, as well as getting somewhat tripped up in the gameplay department. (NB: SS games cannot conform to "modern" standards, such as mythical "balance", because they are children of their era and, not unlike Soul Calibur, lose much of what made them appealing when those "old school tropes" are no longer present and accounted for).
Being and old school Neo Geo owner, I'll keep and eye on the game... However, from here, the roster will strictly dictate any real interest I have in the game; and what's been shown so far, just doesn't meet muster.
For me, it has TWO HUGE THINGS GOING AGAINST IT.
First, the graphics are very basic compared to it's biggest competitor (Street Fighter 6)
Secondly, it is charged premium price while not looking as visually impressive as its competitors.
The diehard SNK fanbase will certainly play this, but it won't be thousands of concurrent players.
Even if two people are playing, a fighting game may be a flop, but is never dead.
