It's pretty different. Try playing or looking at the original Garou to see what City of the Wolves is gonna be like.

Mark of the Wolves and its sequel City of the Wolves are SNK's most direct equivalent to Street Fighter. They are not like King of Fighters or the previous Fatal Fury games, except maybe to very casual fans of 2D fighters. The Wolves games don't have rolls except in the sense that Street Fighter does, as ground recovery. They do have one alternate jump trajectory called a "hop," but it's more like going from a KoF super jump to a regular jump, not a KoF hop. It's not a pressure tool. I haven't gotten my hands on any of the City of the Wolves demos, but Mark of the Wolves was more lenient on input buffering than the other SNK fighters of its time. I.e., it's SNK Street Fighter. If you like Street Fighter, you'll probably like City of the Wolves. If you like King of Fighters and specifically don't like Street Fighter, it's questionable, definitely look for opportunities to demo or beta it if you fall in that category.

KOF doesnt have a lane system like the older FF games, also no ringouts like in RBFF. You can also crouch walk forward in some of the FFs.

Not true.

Kof has 1X1 settings as well. And 4X4 with strikers. And KOF 2001 had a versatile style allowing people to control from 1 to 4 characters against opponents who could also choose between 1 to 4 controllable characters during a match.

Not true.

Huge difference between 3X3 being the standard and " it's always 3x3."

The first 2 Maximum Impact KOF games operate very closely to Fatal Fury games having an identity crisis.

And even on the KOF games operating with trios, they did have a classic mode a la fatal fury based on 1X1.

Whatever. I wasn't paying attention when I wrote "always", I should have written "usually". But Maximum Impact are not canon and 90%+ of the fights are 3x3 anyway.

Actually, the game is set to 1X1. Only with the third game in the series, Regulation A, it started to feature trios.

Being "canon" (SIC), actually, canonical, has nothing to do with what is being discussed.

It is just a different canon. Pretty much like Fatal Fury itself, or the portable KOF (Kof EX).

It is worth mentioning that in the West games from Maximum Impact were released as the annual Kofs. Maximum Impact 2 was labelled as Kof 2006. They are every bit as official as any of the mainline games.

Gameplay-wise, this game looks like KoFXIV/XV minus a bunch of special moves, supers, and characters... Kind of like a all games nowadays, the SNK fighters are regressing.

Yeah, combos are terribly hard to do, but autocombos kill the fun.

If I could get ahold of the vax pushers' "100% safe and effective time machine", I would go back. Alas, that is fantasy... Unless we can figure out how to travel faster than the speed of light without turning into black holes, that is.
