Is it cheating when you use a cheat code or is it required to play the game

The Lego games encourage cheat codes. They gave them out for taking a survey off the game, than it was new (www.legosurvey.com/marvel).

If you mean the red bricks, which you can activate in Deadpools room, than yes, they are required for the "Collect 1,000,000,000 studs" achievement. Without the stud multipliers - be sure to activate them all, to get x3840 - it will take you several hours of tedious grinding to get that many.
