I mean I am playing on Hard difficulty but tanking don't seem worth much.
I also play on hard and tanking only works if you control Val "in my experience" (I have Peacebringer seed on him for damage transfer). AI seems to have trouble dodging alot in this game.
Late game, the Conjurer is great support for Palamena if you want a more mage based playstyle. The Moon Charterer is also excellent, but sadly putting Moon on anyone but Morley is not really an option. Once you can move passives around and give Divine Fist the buff/debuff passives, there's not much reason to use anything else though.
That one passive that increases her Physical Defense more for every buff she has is key.
Not having to dodge around all the time dramatically increased her uptime, more than making up for having lower Physical Attack than Fire Careena. It was not only incredibly easy to play, but the DPS was nothing to sneeze at.
I enjoyed this way more than Fire Careena.
Water Careena wasn't half bad, either.
Darkness Palamena and Darkness Julei also make amazing physical attackers if you focus on stacking Physical Attack on them and forego offensive magic. Scythe and Umbrella are actually super powerful physical weapons when built right.
Although nothing can compare with Moon Morley for obvious reasons, Water and Darkness Morley were both very good, again, built for Physical Attack. In fact, Morley's Staff may be my favorite physical weapon type in the game, with an incredibly satisfying Special Attack chain flowing smoothly into the charged attack.

Overall, a lot of people have talked about how the class balance in this game is awful, and with only a few outstanding exceptions (looking at you, Moon Morley), I have to disagree. A lot of the classes are very good.
Careena with Fire is pretty good but I don't enjoy controlling her... the combos don't flow so good.
I made a mistake putting all Serums into Main Character, only to realize he doesn't have cool spells... except "buffs" like saber or shield. Wasted potential... the worst part is I stopped using him mid game.
Now I have Fire Careena, Light Julien for heals and Paleena on Earth. It works ok until I find something else.
