Does Val have any good classes?
I've only been playing for 4 hours so I've only come across the wind and moon artifacts, but both those class upgrades to Val seem to make him significantly weaker. The decrease to his attack speed and mobility from his default class is enormous. Not to mention with his base class you can chain combos infinitely by alternating between light and heavy attacks. It feels like those artifacts are more meant for their corresponding Alms so I have the wind on Careena and Moon on Morley. Their class upgrades seem significantly better than Val's using them, so I'm guessing Val gets his own artifact at some point that's best for him? Or are all his class upgrades just "meh"?

Water val has very nice traits, though he uses the big sword. Wood val also has nice traits and uses the small sword. Dark val is a high risk-high reward class but also uses the big sword.

Once you get the weapon buff passive, the wind class for Val is pretty much the default best class for him. You can do some stuff with the water and dark classes at higher levels but you need a lot of points to get the passives.

Moon, fire and light are support/tanks, they work great if you main val and use him to defend the team.

Earth for throw builds and wood has a unique build.

Characters don't have a "best" element to use. The class passives are flexible enough so that you can build the characters how you want. Like Careena with the fire class (divine fist) is one of the heaviest melee hitters, even though she has a lot of support classes besides that.
Wind class Val is the best for me. I just put him with ALL the sabers and let the last passive do the rest. That's because I'm always maining with Moon class Montley

You can't go wrong with the berserker class either. That is a main class thou
-Wind Val: for Saber attack damage buff that applies even if you don't hit weakness. Helpful vessel attack that CC monsters well, but don't work best during bosses
-Water Val: for helpful Freeze status effect, disabling enemies and sometimes works on bosses. Helpful vessel attack both monsters and bosses but will slow you down.
-Wood Val: is for when you to use improve damage one-handed sword weapon, which is Val's fastest weapon. Note that one-handed weapon only allows Val to use single-target Attack on enemy, but the class itself has increased Special Attack damage passive. I don't consider Vessel as a small healing area very helpful but better than nothing.
-Shadow Val: can set him aggressive AI-wise. The AI carelessness helps him to activate "increase X when HP at Y %" more often. Vessel is helpful as gap-closer, and its Elemental Attack is very strong.
