Can this game be played only with the keyboard?
Hello fellow RaceFans,

before ya'll feel compelled to all the reflex-answers that have been given since... eternity, really:
.) Steering Wheel / Pedals doesn't work for me (Space constraints)
.) Controller (even analog) doesnt work for me (thats on me, i never managed the analog sticks)
But i have been playing racing games since the 90's.

And i like playing F1 games, but i am an arcade driver at best, and aware of it.
And yes, keyboard input is 0%/100% throttle, i'm aware.

All the way up to and including F1 2020 keyboard has been working wonderful for me, but with F1 2021 it just didnt work no more, i never managed to get past Bahrain T1, always spun out.

I do get the argument, the cars / regulations changed with 2021, and the IRL cars got harder to control. I really get that.
But then again, in the drivers assists the Setting "Traction Control" DOES exist, and thats not exactly true to reality, now, is it? So there must be some leeway for arcade players, but in F1 2021 it just Did. Not. Work.

So, out of that disappointment i skipped F1 2022 and 2023, but for 2024 i read some reports, that play with keyboard might be possible again.

I have seen some YT videos (upandaz, IGN, and others) which seemed praise the "new handling model" and hint that keyboard would work again, but with YT one never knows how "true" they are.

I guess, in a nutshell, i'm asking:
Does the traction control in F1 2024 work again in a way that one manages sharp slow corners, without constantly spinning out despite the "100% throttle"?
(Bahrain T1 being a prime example, half the corners of Monaco, etc...)

So i would really appreciate any insights of players out there who have the game (2024 that is) and tried it with keyboard. I really dont mind paying €70 to €90 for a game, but only if it works for me.

Thanks in advance to everyone taking the time,

Alexis Van Wien

I've always used a keyboard and the 2024 version of the game is no different from the others. I've found that the handling is actually better than last year. The grip is awesome and you can really throw the car into the corners.. The handling issues others are reporting seem to just be for those using a wheel. Traction control is effective and I've had no problem with spinning. The rear end stepping out happens but only rarely. Monaco is actually enjoyable again and you don't have to constantly tap away to negotiate the hairpin. I have traction control and automatic gear shifts but I handle everything else. Hope this helps. As for the rest, you need to have deep pockets if you have any interest in Podium Pass. There are a few bugs you've probably seen on You Tube but on the whole, I prefer this to the 2022 and 2023 versions.

Hi fellas. I came to find this out too as a keyboard player only and I find the perfect question and perfect answer on one page.

I saw the statement on the store page where it says controller required blah keyboard etc 'not supported. 'Then before I left the page in disgust I remembered that 'not supported' does not equate to 'doesn't work' so here I am.

It seems to a new thing to say 'controller only' on store page and I've moaned to no one in particular (in previous threads) about this silly idea. For those that may not be aware of what that statement means in reality (that other controllers can still work) they could have walked away and not looked back.

Now that is not good enough in my book as they could lose sales and someone might have missed out. - and it could have been me. Just say'n chaps. Thanks for the definitive info

Theoretically yes, the keyboard is supported by the game. However practically you're in for hundreds of hours of training to achieve something, that you could learn in like 5-10 hours with a controller, even when you're new to controllers (so i would say this series was never really playable on keyboards)

Though since F 23 added way more grip, traction control should be stronger as well and there's also the casual mode, which adds even more grip and steering assist.

If you want to test it in the 2 hour refund window, i would recommend to way for the 1.1 patch though, as they change a littlebit about the handling.

``Playing with a keyboard and mouse isn't supported.`` Maybe they refer to play the game with keyboard together with MOUSE. Perhaps the game isn`t support emulator programs for mouse steering
I play f1 23 using mouse steering and keyboard and it`s great.

Wanted to write a reply to this topic, but you took (some of my) my words out of my mouth, fellow keyboard-player. Salute to you and to the others like us.

(Just for the record, I do own Xbox Elite Series 2 controller plus the usual workhorse Logitech G920 wheel, but I'm both old and old-school so I prefer the keyboard - despite that it really hurts the fingers - back in my days we played the computer-games with mouse and keyboard)

I took advantage of these free days of play (21-25 november), I downloaded the game and despite my skepticism I was pleasantly surprised by it.

Last year was nasty, F1 23 was very disappointing, plus I gotta mention the absolutely horrible experience I had with F1 2021 (regarding the control of the car and AI behavior, the menus and graphics are actually very good), so I didn't know what to expect.

Fortunately, in F1 24 the car handles better (from keyboard) than in the games from 2019, 2021, 2023 (and probably 2022 also, didn't play it in the last half of year so I forgot many details), the AI behavior and raceability is significantly improved, overall it's a pleasant experience so far.

Sure, the bad parts people complain about are there, the front end is too pointy (at least in Time Trial, in My Team I don't have any problems - I chose a midfield car - but didn't try the Driver Career yet), tons of unnecessary menus in which you get lost easily (I had to Google "Where is the Time Trial", if you can imagine that :steamhappy:), that F1 Life is rather useless and unnecessary complicated (I strongly think they should've put their time and efforts into classic cars and classic tracks, F1 fans - we, the people - really want that as we love the history of this sport), that you have to buy a decent looking livery and racing suit (plus helmet, gloves etc.) because you can't change all the colors of the single default one etc. etc., but the truth is that I'm seriously thinkin' of buyin' it on Christmas sale.

If the handling from keyboard is good and the AI drivers behave decent and I have Nigel Mansell as team mate in My Team career, well, that's quite appealing to me.

P.S.: By the way, can't help myself from pointing out the irony of the fact that on the Steam page of the game there is a disclaimer that playing from the keyboard is not supported, while the game itself handles better that many from the previous years...
