Drunk On 3 Fluid Ounces?
I had a character with insomnia. He had no sleeping pills, so one night I had him take a hit (1/12th of a bottle of whisky) to relax him so he could sleep easier. This is a little less than 3 fluid ounces, if we're talking a standard 1 liter bottle. The sign flashed "Player is drunk."

The character was not relaxed, and did not sleep. Instead, as soon as the booze wore off he went into a hangover like he'd been on a 3 day bender, with uncontrollable vomiting, and other side effects.

This seems like an unbelievable effect for 3 ounces of whiskey. Curious, I had a character drink 4 belts from the bottle--about 11 fluid ounces. This unfortunate began suffering loss of blood!!! Bottled whiskey doesn't deteriorate over time. In fact the older it is the more they charge for it. So, I'm wondering what's going on here. Is it some kind of censorship, so the little kids don't see any benefits from using liquor?

All bottles in the game are 0.5 litre ones - each takes two droplets of water weighting 0.25 kg (so 250ml each). So that makes each droplet of whiskey a little over 40ml, one shot glass basically.

And the reason why the alcohol works from the first use is simply mechanic - the game engine does not support stacking conditions. Using an item can grant player a condition (or not) and that's it. So using (consuming) whiskey can give player the "drunk" condition, but not multiple ones ("somewhat drunk, drunk, very drunk" for example) if he uses it more than once.

That is also the reason why player cannot overdose on pills.

But how does this explain: "The player is losing blood." The sign that appears after 4 hits (6 fluid ounces)? I quite often have downed over 6 ounces of liquor, but never noticed any bleeding as side effect. If there's no stacking, why doesn't the blood loss start with the first shot?

I still don't see why an ounce or two of whiskey wouldn't relax you if you're having a hard time sleeping. And the idea of uncontrollable vomiting after coming down off one shot of liquor is hard to believe. Something like: "Player's mouth feels like there's cotton in it." or "Player is thirsty." seems more believable.

Lost Blood does not necessary mean your character is bleeding. Alcohol thins blood a little(by affecting blood coagulation), effectively lowering your "blood supply". One drop is not affecting you much, but drinking several can make that warning appear - that is because, while conditions do not stack, status changes can.

I do agree that the after-effects of drinking are surprisingly severe at first, but consider that those same effects will apply, no matter how much will the player drink, even if it is the whole bottle at once.

Its a simplification of course, but Dan really does not have time to build up the whole system for that one case. Hopefully, in NEO Scavenger 2, the conditions will be able to stack and we will be finally able to get drunk correctly ;)

Fortunately--or not--I am already able to get drunk correctly. I must admit it doesn't aid your long time survival chances.

Thanks for answering, Kaaven!

That's basically the limitation I'm dealing with. I'd love to have multiple gradations of conditions, such as buzzed, drunk, and blacking out. But to add this, I'd need some sort of condition overflow system, which I haven't had time to build.

Instead, I just made the condition provide medium effects (both good and bad) immediately. Namely, pain relief, thin blood, thirst, slight chill, reduced healing rate/immune system. The main reason one would drink in NEO Scavenger is for emergency pain relief, though awareness and sleepiness would make sense, too.

I hope that someday I can make a more sophisticated conditions system, as there are some really cool effects I could add! (including those mentioned here)

Well, congratulations on doing this all yourself. Last year I paid $60.00 for Rome 2, which had a budget of millions, and God knows how many people working on it. That game was, and still is after a dozen patches, awful, the worst game of the Total War series.

I put over 800 hours into it, determined to wade my way through to one Roman victory. I got one, but I would never do it again. I go back to it occasionally to see if it's improved at all. It has, slightly. It will never be as good as the original Medieval Total War.

I've gotten much more enjoyment from your game, for a fraction of what I paid for Rome 2. Maybe people will begin to realize that bigger budgets, extreme graphics, and stereo sound don't always produce a better game.

have u treid Shogun 2:Total War? It's my favorite, and a lot of people say that is the series highest point

With the best will in the world I just can't get interested in Japanese history. My favorite of the series was the original Medieval Total War. If they redid the graphics, and changed nothing else, it would be the best game in the total war franchise.
