What is with the game randomly causing the chat window to blank out?
Even with nothing being reported I could see the other guy bleeding, in pain, unconscious in his status window. Sometimes it just fades to black and I lose.

You could have had an internal injury, or that thing you cn get from the swamp.

My status window was clean before and during the fight. It simply stopped reporting all data in the chat window. Horrible glitch that has ruined 2 good runs now.

hmm, thats odd...the only thing i can think of that might have killed you was internal bleeding if it wasn't showing any data.

This indeed sounds like a bug. Possibly a new one, though I think it came up once or twice over the years.

If I understand it correctly, you're saying the combat UI and message log basically stops updating at some point?

If so, it's definitely a bug, but a rare one I haven't been able to reproduce yet. (And it comes up infrequently enough that even players are having trouble reproducing it.)

If you're seeing it reliably, can you tell me how to force it to happen? If I can make it happen reliably, that usually gives me a good chance of finding and fixing it.

As for the fade to black, that might be normal if the player dies after the UI stops updating. E.g. you were doing well, but then the UI stops updating and things get worse without you seeing it, until you end up dying and the game fades to black.

So the fade to black might be a side effect of the bug, rather than the cause. Let me know if I've understood correctly or not!

Sorry I was a tad harsh with the wording. Cleaned things up in my original post. Other things were going on at the time and when I sat down to relax with a new title I was excited about it was like "man what else now?"

I haven't been able to force it, and you're correct it's pretty rare. Happened about 3 times in my total hours played so far. When it happens it's always at the beginning of combat and it doesn't matter what condition I'm in or the opponent. We can take actions, and I see status updates on the upper windows. It's the UI text that completely stops.

It just happened in the middle of an early run. Been playing about an hour. Doing well. After my patchwork pancho fell apart I'm not getting any more text reports on the bottom window. Top UI still working for combat and scavaging.

Here is what a fight looks like when it happens:

As you can see, the upper UI is working fine. The lower part is frozen.

edit: The GOOD news is that if I survive the fight (which I did) then save/exit completely, it works again. It's a ghetto work around but better than nothing.

Thanks for the info! I wonder if it was the patchwork poncho or if it might've been related to the bad mutha dying the turn before. Both events woud've dumped a load of items onto the ground, and that's as good a place as any to have a bug.

Regarding saving and exiting as a workaround, are you able to save, exit, restart the app, and reload while in combat? You might not have to fight blind if that's the case.

I just had it happen again. The pancho time was a deer that ran in then out and the mutha came later. This time a bad mutha came at me and I put him down. NPCs entering my hex could be the random trigger.

Also this time the save and quit button would save, but not return me to the main menu. Had to force it closed. Also also (lol) I just noticed this bug has been happening in 1 hr intervals.

edit: Didn't think to save and quit during combat. I'll try that the next time it happens.

edit2: The save and exit button properly took me to the main menu after a restart, just like how a restart fixes the txt bug too.

We may be getting closer with these clues.

The one thing that I don't understand, though, is why this doesn't come up more often. AI entering the hex, or even dying in the hex, is a fairly common occurrence, and there are lots of people playing the game each day. I'd expect this bug to be reported almost constantly if it was just caused by that alone.

What type of machine and OS are you using? I don't think that should matter, but it can't hurt to record that info.

And can you think of any other weird events that seem to plague your games? Maybe this is one of those bugs that only happens after another bug triggers it, and we should be looking into that other bug?

I usually die to some bullsh*t hidden enemy I can't find within 20 tries so my games don't last long. It has put me off from playing and I've moved on.

I just want to chime in that this just happened to me, too. I have to admit, I can handle brutally difficult games but that difficulty means it really hurts to die to such a glitch and kind of puts me off playing -- which is a shame, because I really like this game! Next time it happens, I'll try to copy the save file before trying (and most likely failing) to get safe. :(
