In general, runs will die somewhere between Very Hard and Impossible if you are not properly equipped. As drop luck does vary, there is only so much you can do if you can't find enough sustainability items (life leech, regeneration, partial immunity, etc.). Just do your best and cope with the fact that not every run will be successful on Monsoon or even Rainstorm.
So, it looks like, that I was wasting way too much time during my playthroughs
Of course, given that you've only unlocked the commando, you might be hurting for some of the better items in the game, which are only unlocked through accomplishing challenges and achievements. You may opt for a quicker playthrough just to try to unlock more things.
The old roguelike sayings apply to this game:
"Don't try to win from the start. Winning the game is very hard. Sometimes, it's even impossible. Set a goal for yourself, and try to achieve that goal. This way, even if you lose, you've still accomplished something in that run."
In Risk of Rain, set a challenge as one of your goals - like "collect 20k gold" and just do that thing. Eventually, the game's challenge becomes second-nature to you and you find yourself winning.
Surviving can sometimes be dependant on the items that you get. What I generally do is, try to buy/loot 1-2 survival items in the first level, while exploring the map to find the teleporter and looking for chests. If there are a lot of chests, I farm a little before I activate the teleporter, if there are just a few chests, I just activate the teleporter once I hit around level 5-6. After getting enough gold, I go for the chests that are close to me, if a chest is very far away, that'll just come back as increased difficulty as you can expect.
For the first three levels, I try to stay below the 4th difficulty (5th bar slice on difficulty-meter) if I can. As far as I can tell, going fast may punish you, aswell as going slower. If you go fast, and get a boss like "Imp Overlord", it may just be the end since you lack the item count. If you go slow, even a simple enemy can take a lot of your time.
When you spawn the boss, try to move to an area (which is close to the teleporter) where you can climb something, or jump over something to "separate" the enemies from each other. Those enemies that cannot jump are generally tall enough for you to still keep hitting them, and meanwhile, the enemies that can jump will come after you, and they'll be effectively separated. I usually let them spawn on an area, kill as many as I can, then climb somewhere else and let them spawn there, that way there will be less clutter.
About the shrines, if you have good HP regeneration, always play the HP shrines. Money shrines, depends on how much in total you'd need for all of the chests you've seen while moving around, and how much you have in hand.
If I finish a level with the least amount of gold (after spending it, of course), I consider it a successful level. Gold to XP ratio is just very low, and I consider the extra gold that is converted to XP just a waste. Of course, this will not apply to the later levels.
Anyway, keep playing. You will unlock some new characters just by playing the game, and you might find another character that just suits you better.
Thanks a lot ! These tips are really, really nice.
As a general rule for me I tend to plan on triggering the teleport "rush" within 4-5 minutes of starting that particular level. The exception being the temple as I seem to find that to be a fairly easy map to fully clear for items.
With that time in mind I'll see what stuff I have and will find the teleport but during that hunt I will make a note of boxes or the multichoice items and the cost to get them. Shrines I tend to avoid as they can suck your funds dry fast is you get a bad run.
Drones depend on what damage boosters I have but if the time is good then I'll use spare cash to get those on the way back to the portal or make a detour if they're close.
As Iyravega said HP based shrines are worth a visit especially if you've got a good selection of regen stuff like the shrooms. Just be aware that there's a good chance something will spawn nearby so clear first and have a solid exit strategy before you gamble 99% of your life away. The shield from the heart helps a fair bit here.
Boss fights depend on the class, magma worm can go down very quickly for the engie is you find a clear spot and dump all the mines you can on that one place. Mines work weel vs the vagrant as it will blindly chase you over them. The imp and wisp in some locations can be persuaded off the edge of the map or onto the bouncers where they will often just stay bouncing up and down while you shoot them. Generally though they follow a predictable pattern so just need to watch what they do.
