General tips to have succesfull run
Hi,
I am reading a lot about how you beat the game. Or how you rule during your playthrough. And I am like, damn. I had 12 tries and I never beat the 3rd level.
Can you share some tips with me ?
For example how fast I should skip levels.
"grab 2-3 items from chests and finish first level"
or "nah, farm lvl 1 until you have all items from shrines/chests and then move on.

Or dunno, something like that. Really few tips from "pro´s". Cause really, I am strugling a lot [and yeah, I have only commando]

The general strategy is to not waste time. In other words, your goal at the start of every stage is to locate and activate the teleporter as soon as possible. You'll surely need to kill mobs in the process, so gathering cash to open chests will come naturally. As for item-hunting after the teleporter is ready, my personal rule of thumb is to never sacrifice more than ~30 seconds (round trip) to open a single chest. If I have to cross the entire stage just to get another item, I'd rather convert my cash into experience and keep the difficulty easier.

In general, runs will die somewhere between Very Hard and Impossible if you are not properly equipped. As drop luck does vary, there is only so much you can do if you can't find enough sustainability items (life leech, regeneration, partial immunity, etc.). Just do your best and cope with the fact that not every run will be successful on Monsoon or even Rainstorm.

So, if you see chest and you dont have enough money, you will not farm nearby mobs for cash to open it ? You will skip it and if teleport is nearby, you will come back later ?
So, it looks like, that I was wasting way too much time during my playthroughs

My rule of thumb is to try to be at level 3 by the 20 minute mark. It's a slower playthrough, and certainly a bit tougher, but it gives me the opportunity to go for the extra items.

Of course, given that you've only unlocked the commando, you might be hurting for some of the better items in the game, which are only unlocked through accomplishing challenges and achievements. You may opt for a quicker playthrough just to try to unlock more things.

The old roguelike sayings apply to this game:

"Don't try to win from the start. Winning the game is very hard. Sometimes, it's even impossible. Set a goal for yourself, and try to achieve that goal. This way, even if you lose, you've still accomplished something in that run."

In Risk of Rain, set a challenge as one of your goals - like "collect 20k gold" and just do that thing. Eventually, the game's challenge becomes second-nature to you and you find yourself winning.

Hello Mokuba. No matter how much we write here, you should find your own style. But I can write down how I play this game in general.

Surviving can sometimes be dependant on the items that you get. What I generally do is, try to buy/loot 1-2 survival items in the first level, while exploring the map to find the teleporter and looking for chests. If there are a lot of chests, I farm a little before I activate the teleporter, if there are just a few chests, I just activate the teleporter once I hit around level 5-6. After getting enough gold, I go for the chests that are close to me, if a chest is very far away, that'll just come back as increased difficulty as you can expect.

For the first three levels, I try to stay below the 4th difficulty (5th bar slice on difficulty-meter) if I can. As far as I can tell, going fast may punish you, aswell as going slower. If you go fast, and get a boss like "Imp Overlord", it may just be the end since you lack the item count. If you go slow, even a simple enemy can take a lot of your time.

When you spawn the boss, try to move to an area (which is close to the teleporter) where you can climb something, or jump over something to "separate" the enemies from each other. Those enemies that cannot jump are generally tall enough for you to still keep hitting them, and meanwhile, the enemies that can jump will come after you, and they'll be effectively separated. I usually let them spawn on an area, kill as many as I can, then climb somewhere else and let them spawn there, that way there will be less clutter.

About the shrines, if you have good HP regeneration, always play the HP shrines. Money shrines, depends on how much in total you'd need for all of the chests you've seen while moving around, and how much you have in hand.

If I finish a level with the least amount of gold (after spending it, of course), I consider it a successful level. Gold to XP ratio is just very low, and I consider the extra gold that is converted to XP just a waste. Of course, this will not apply to the later levels.

Anyway, keep playing. You will unlock some new characters just by playing the game, and you might find another character that just suits you better.

Thanks a lot ! These tips are really, really nice.

Deciding whether or not to wait and farm cash for a box is your call. As you get more used to the class you play and knowledge of what the items are that call is made easier.

As a general rule for me I tend to plan on triggering the teleport "rush" within 4-5 minutes of starting that particular level. The exception being the temple as I seem to find that to be a fairly easy map to fully clear for items.

With that time in mind I'll see what stuff I have and will find the teleport but during that hunt I will make a note of boxes or the multichoice items and the cost to get them. Shrines I tend to avoid as they can suck your funds dry fast is you get a bad run.

Drones depend on what damage boosters I have but if the time is good then I'll use spare cash to get those on the way back to the portal or make a detour if they're close.

As Iyravega said HP based shrines are worth a visit especially if you've got a good selection of regen stuff like the shrooms. Just be aware that there's a good chance something will spawn nearby so clear first and have a solid exit strategy before you gamble 99% of your life away. The shield from the heart helps a fair bit here.

Boss fights depend on the class, magma worm can go down very quickly for the engie is you find a clear spot and dump all the mines you can on that one place. Mines work weel vs the vagrant as it will blindly chase you over them. The imp and wisp in some locations can be persuaded off the edge of the map or onto the bouncers where they will often just stay bouncing up and down while you shoot them. Generally though they follow a predictable pattern so just need to watch what they do.
