In Isaac I killed Mom after 3 hours, and Mom's Heart after 3 more hours. By then I think I'd already unlocked all characters (except the dead baby).
I've played RoR for 6 hours and I haven't completed the 3rd level yet. I've only unlocked two characters.
Binding of Isaac is pretty easy untill the womb and then significantly harder in sheol, but it seems pretty hard (risk of rain that is) but I'm still sceptical.
Honestly though, the challenge of Isaac came more from getting all the AChievements ( I have Platinum God so I've played the ♥♥♥♥ out of it as you can imagine), and getting through the game with certian handcuffs than it was difficult overall. When you first started play ing it, like this game, everything was harder and you died over and over again in the Basement and the caves before you unlocked enough things to push on to Mom. Same thing here. You unlock more stuff, learn the mechanics, figure out what characters you like best, etc. and it becomes easier.
This game has more replayability imo, however in making it different than Isaac. Well...maybe not more int he snese of a lto more characters, but BETTER replayability and more challenging than Isaac I think. Since the characters in this are all different like their own class it isn't like jsut playing through the game a bunch of times with similar characters like Isaac was. All the characters had the same mechanics, but just had slightly different stats, with maybe a starter item. RoR all the characters are completely different, with different mechanics and skills so you are chanllenged by having to learn how to play well with ALL of them. Only thing Isaac did was hamper you by giving you no health fromt he other characters and then put you in a gmae that focused much more on luck imo.
I like it better than Spelunky. I think it has more depth. Spelunky the time is just that forced ghost thing and really there isn't a whole lot new to it from game to game to me. There aren't as many items that change the way you play. This one has 100 so far, and much like Isaac can help you much more than the ones in Spelunky. I think the time restraints in this game are much more fair too. You can wander a lot more in this the first few levels trying to get good items, while in Spelunky you must go go go the enitre game.
This gmae does get hard fast though so you can't sit there for 15 minutes, or anything. The neat part is that it is noticeable in how the difficulty rises. It brings harder monsters out and more bosses. Unlike Spelunky where you have to jsut throw a rope up and find a ladder to move the ghost out of your way to find the door. Plus it has a nice end of level fight for your life scenario imo. You must stay alive for 90 seconds with monsters coming and a boss usually. Beat the boss and then finish off the enemies before you can teleport to the next level.
If you like Isaac I am pretty sure you will like this. It's very addicting and doesn't feel cheap at all.
and yeah, I haven't been able to buy this game yet, but judging by the demo, it has a steep difficulty curve. it's really fun to play though, and it gets better as it gets more hectic.
In any case, let me tell you, it's wonderfully difficult.
Monsoon difficulty -very- much changes how you should play. Either get good item drops and placements or you're already dead.
Yeah, spelunky is definitely more of an "arcade game" in that anyone can figure out how to play it, but only the most skilled will really be able to "master" the game. Where BoI in contrast is very much about learning all of the items/characters/bosses/etc. I think RoR takes the difficulty of both of these and makes for an overall more difficult game. You still have tons of items and item combinations (like in Isaac) but that is combined with the sort of arcade gaming from spelunky (insane reaction times needed to truly master the game).
Of course, all three games are great. If only we could have a collaborative Hopoo/McMillen/Derek Yu game. That game would be great for exploding heads and melting faces.
