keyboard is the way to go.
Most games only support the Xbox controllers, for me reason to buy those (never had any problems... well except the price ofcourse ;) ).
Yeah but not everyone wants to play a game with a crappy controller, much less buy the controller ... Thank the FSM for Joy2Key
This, to me, makes all the difference. Without up=jump, the controls feel clunky, but with that bind, they feel very natural. It's also worth toying ASDF and ZXCV to see which is more comfortable for you. I prefer ASDF because I can feel the F key. DotA/League players might even prefer QWER.
Anyways, I use nothing but a keyboard (and haven't the entire time I've played, since the pre-Steam days), and can totally wreck everything. I rebound my attacks to Shift, A, W, and D, use items to S, the use key to R, and kept jump at space and arrow keys as movement. So, yes, the game is most definitely playable without a controller, you just need to find what controls work best for you.
