Mysterious Cube Item?

I havent played the game in a while, and after defeating the boss in the first level, I roamed around, and saw what looked like some kind of item. It looked like a dark purple cube with a purple outline around it. I wasnt able to retrieve it because the terrain was in the way and it didnt occur to me to take a screenshot at the time.

Anyways, does anybody know what this thingy thing is?
