Black screen and audio.
Like it says up there, I get nothing but audio and a black screen when starting the game. A loading image pops up then nothing but black and sounds that goes from text scrolling to menu music when hitting a key. Can't do anything else put hitting escape to pause the menu music at all.

Things I tried after spending time looking over these forums, the offical forums, and a nunber of google searches.
Reinstalled game, verify game cache, reinstalled C++ 64 and 86, ran .exe as admin (crashes and gives an error instead of black screen), running the game in either fullscreen or windowed by way of the prefs file, and restarted PC after game install and fresh C++ installs.

Im out of ideas on how to get the game running and I would HATE to waste my one Steam refund after being able to hold on to it for so long. Need the help here.

Specs-
i5 3.3 CPU
Redeon 6800 serires
Win 7

Are you running chrome while launching RoR? If so, close all chrome processes and try again

Don't even have Chrome on this PC. I use Firefox and it doesn't help running or not.

Edit-
The only programs I run with games is Steam and VoiceMeeter with maybe taskmanager. VoiceMeeter I use to split audio into channels so I can have ways to contol their levels without much work for recording and such. Ending that doesn't help either and it's the same with taskmanager.

Still can't do much of anything. Somehow found the quit game option in the main menu by randomly clicking everywhere in the black. So the game is running. I just can't see ♥♥♥♥.

Anyway I can set the resolution in the prefs file? Maybe messing with that could do something but the file only has Gameplay and Online options in it so far and I had to put in the Video section myself to see if fullscreen did anything (it didn't). Don't know the commands or placements for resolution changes.

Sounds like the game is running, but you can't see it. Seems like a display driver issue. As silly as it sounds, make sure your GFX card driver is up to date. There's really nothing more I can think of if that doesn't work

Nope. Just updated my AMD drivers and still the same thing. Plus now I have to un-♥♥♥♥ my screen again as I now have black bars once more.

I use a 42 inch HDTV for my PC and if I don't have it set to 1080 then nothing fits the screen right. Either has bars around the sides or things just do not fit right. And now for some reason after updating the drivers even at 1080 I have black bars.

If it isn't one thing it's another. This is going to be an annoying day from the looks of it.

I'm more of an nVidia guy, but when you were updating your ATI drivers, was there an option similar to "clean install" that nVidia has? This removes any profiles, and performs what is closer to a fresh installation rather than updating some files.

Is this the only game that you have this problem with?

Right click on the desktop, choose Personalize from the menu.
In the lower left hand corner you will see a link called "Display" - click that.
In the upper right hand area of the next screen will be a link called "Set Custom Text Size (DPI)" - click that.
Do you have these values?
Calibrate default should be small - 100%
Set custom text size (DPI) default should be 100%

Have you tried going to the properties of the .exe game file and changing the compatibility setting to Windows 7? I know this sounds dumb but it's worked for other games.

What do you mean that things don't fit right? Do you mean you can see the game but it is very small? If you can get RoR open, go to the options and change Scale to 3x (or change scale=3 in the Prefs.ini)

Also, if you could provide more details about CPU and GPU, that would be great.

i5 2500k 3.3GHz CPU
XFX Double D Radeon HD 6870 GPU
16GB RAM

Text size is 100%, no custom settings. That was a problem in another game long ago and put it back to default. Hasn't been past 100% since

No other game has any problems that I can recall at this time. Some has had a few problems on first start, any of the normal stuff really has happened to me by now, but all of my games that I have installed and played as far back as I can remember work. Minus RoR.

The not fitting right is to do with my using a TV as a moitor. Hasn't scaled very well in the past and tends to black bar or overscan depending on resolution. Anything below 1080 has the bars and anything above 1080 might overscan. Hasn't been a problem in years. Only one thing has been a problem with this and that was some unscalealbe window used for a mouse controler hybrid thing. Kinda a half-assed program to start with.

I'll give feedback in a few hours on the fix ideas. In the middle of a meeting typing this when I shouldn't be.

This is an odd one but seems to be a fix that works. In the compatibilty tab of the .exe I ticked the run as admin box. Turns out that doing running as admin with just a right click wasn't enough, hell if I know why. But the game runs with needing to ask if I want to run the game as admin with every start.

The really odd part, and something I didn't know was a thing that could have been a problem, is that every time I run the game a pop up shows that the game needs to be ran in 16 or 32 bit color mode. But unticking the "run in 256 colors" box removes that pop up.

The game works now and that's all I care about. Thank you all for the tips. I can live with a confirm pop up on game start if it means I can play the game.

K, glad it works. Maybe you should post an apology to Misery in the other thread as well

Id rather end it where I did. We likely read each others post in the wrong tone or gotten our messages warped somehow. Text reads as you wish it to read. I hold no problems with the guy and don't see a need to drag things into the mud if one of us reads the others post in a way they didn't type it again.

Happy that it works for you now, that was a strange problem you had there :P

I had the same problem and for me it was extremely easy to fix. When you start the game and the screen is black, just use Alt+Enter. It works!

DUDE~! Varien, you are the man! The Alt+Enter trick was the fix for me! Grazi grazi much love and salute ! (^,....,^)\
