Yup, This was during the time period when publishers (notably EA and Activision) were experimenting with locking fairly basic game features behind DLC codes to either discourage (block) reselling or at the very least get some money from resales buy used shoppers buying the DLC to access game features.
So we got things like the Midnight DLC, the "online pass" in some games, etc.
Oh, and also... Does anyone remember if an ability to buy one silver and one gold perk was in the base game? I don't remember neither being a thing back when I was a teen, but I wasn't the sharpest tool in a set, so... Just wandering
