I think Auto steer can help early, but separate controls is better overall. The biggest thing to get used to is counter steering the skis. Turn right to go left with the skis, leaning is as expected.

You will find once you get comfortable with auto steer, turning it off will actually help you.
I find leaning is key to turning and feathering the skis ( counter steer ) will help with angling your corners.

Climbing is about leaning in, angle of approach, and power management. I'd switch auto-steer off and leave it off. The feeling of control you have once you get used to it is amazing and you'll start to sense the things you're doing wrong when you screw up.
