Map editor tips?
I'm actually having a hard time making a urban map in DK, mainly because I can't find the right brushes for it. I can't figure out how to make the road, the sidewalks etc. like in the Urban Madness map (which is awesome).
Also, is there a way to draw brushes in a straight line?

Any help would really be appreciated!

Red Panda has a brushes pack in the workshop; you might find it useful.

For drawing straight lines, I would zoom in all the way, click, hold, and use the arrow keys to move in the direction you want. Alternatively, increase the grid scale and just run your mouse across the screen.

Most of the ingame levels are created in photoshop and not the editor.

For straight lines, you should increase the grid size (e.g. 64). The brush will snap to the grid and it will be much easier to draw straight lines.

Thanks guys!

With only using the editor, you can create some unique looking groundwork. Only getting the hang of it myself making a few maps for Workshop, so I am no expert, but I've found just fiddling with the opacity and adding numerous brush layers of varying textures can add to somewhat varied textured groundwork.

The only thing I'm struggling with is road markings, there's not a texture that I've come across that matches anything I find close to suitable (that isn't tiled in some way). If however, there was a texture/brush that was just plain white, it would be much easier to knock up a decent urban map.

Can you give us some examples of what markings you would find useful? Maybe some image links.

You can find plain colours and new brush shapes in the mod I posted above

To be honest, it's not so much individual markings that I would find useful, as depending where people live, road markings (and colours) vary. Say for instance, I'm in the UK, roads here tend to look like the below:

If I was to create that in the editor, I would really need just a plain block white and yellow texture, as well as some use of the wear and tear brushing and a little blending.

Below is taken from the Urban Madness map, I feel I could closely replicate the detail of the markings with just a white block texture:

If we could have the option to rotate a texture, we could essentially (along with block colours) create a wider variety of our own road markings, rather than just adding a few specific markings if you get my meaning. With the ability to rotate, I could essentially create the below:

The addition of block colours would allow me to tint certain textures too, with just a plain black on say quarter opacity, I could get that asphalt look to the below:

Personally I find with the right set of simple tools, it can allow for a more complex and detailed creation. I suppose we could just utilise external programs to achieve all of the above, but personally, I prefer to keep it all in-game. Made in-game, for the game!

Thanks guys, keep up the good work!

Looks good! Unfortunately I'm an absolute weirdo when it comes to mods and I'm not that keen on using them. But keep it up!

Don't worry, just click on "subscribe" and you'll automatically get additional brushes for your map editor once you launch the game, nothing more. I highly recommend this mod.

That would be useful, especially when it comes to rotating sidewalks.

A little bump. The sidewalks are flat (and I'm not sure if I've used the right brush for that), how could I make it better?

You would have to manually add shadows. We'll add something about this in the next version.

Smoothing out the edges and "roughing" up any texture with the Wear textures and Shape brushes can go along way in my opinion. Personally what I like to do is to make the edges seem "rounded off" to try give more of an illusion that the surface is not flat.

The best I could probably do with my meagre art skills was:

My feeble attempt at a slight shadow (to give the curb some depth) was done with just a line of the generic Carpet7 texture.

Square and circular shadow textures? Hopefully rotatable!

If there are any requests. I'll certainly try to add them
