Why? It is forbidden in case of changing the region of the account in order to buy the game cheaper, but there is nothing forbidden in installing a free game.

Not only were *most VPNs already blocked, Square announced they would be increasing their anti VPN measures some time today 12/8/23--meaning some people that have been playing since the launch week on mobile using a VPN are probably going to lose access.

It is expressly forbidden in their terms of service. It's likely, because several nations particularly, in SEA nations, there are various laws regarding Gacha games. While they are not entirely illegal they are regulated to the point of needing to spend additional resources to legally operate in those nations. Square clearly feels it is not worth the resources to make functional alterations for each of those nations. It feels a little wild to me that they can't simply ignore VPN users but, apparently it can cause all sorts of legal issues on their side somehow.

No, there aren't lol. Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and various other Chinese and Korean gacha games can be played freely in SEA and practically dominating SEA mobile market. Not to mention some of SE's own gacha games like FF:BE, FF:RK, Mobius FF is and were available in SEA. Legal issues my ass. This is just typical Japanese company antic of excluding SEA region just because as usual. SE and Konami in particular are so fond of region locking Asia.

Someone on the FF7EC Reddit thread about a week ago found a workaround with a VPN. Something about using Australia and a specific VPN that they mentioned was free to demo.
