Arcade had always suited better in 2D whereas simulation games suited better in 3D (thats why Mario 64 felt kind of heavy compared to its 2D equivalent in SMW and SMB3)
And that's also why the most recent Sonic game (Unleashed-Colors-Generation) were kinda straighforward in the 3D speed gameplay.
But Freedom planet focuses less on speed than sonic game in general (yes, there are some high speed part in the game but most level aren't solely based on speed, thermal base is a prime example) maybe if the game focuses more on the beat em up gameplay (without falling into the repetitive battle system of unleashed) and removing some pointless platforming part that will make you stop playing it (like in Heroes, remember mystic mansion as team dark?) that would be a good idea
