I know a lot of existing players with be against this but the game performed not very well on the opening day which is somewhat expected but a lot of us refunded and are letting this simmer for a while.

Now $35 USD is not a lot but there are too many games to purchase just based on potential and the hope that it will be 'good' in 12+ months time.
I have no problems paying my $35 USD when the game has a bit more of a game loop, optimisation and loot potential but would also be fine buying at a discount playing a few dozen hours then wait till it's ready for more long term playability.

I do wonder if they can or even will be able to do discounts given the different packages but I hope the base game has a discount at some point to where players who are hesitant are more willing to jump in

Maybe, I suspect not. They sold more than they had expected, so I don't think they need a lot more players right now.
