Gray Zone Warfare

Is this game worth it
Been watching this game since before release. Patches seem to come out at a glacial pace and the reviews consistently post about the same issues for months on end. Not any major content updates either from what I understand.

1400 players online rn.

Is it worth it? is it ... F U N? or are the reviews justified? owners only.

That said, it's much better than at release. I still clearly remember the issues from the early days—players running around without heads or clothes, NPC enemies soaking up one or two full magazines, etc. Most of those problems have been fixed by now. Still, there's a lot left to do. The game still feels extremely empty—whether it's items, enemy variety, weapons, gameplay systems, and so on.

I dont understand how they've went this long without a content update. They allegedly offloading all their mobile IPs to do this and they release a patch once every six months and its just bug fixing the egregious bugs that should have never been there to begin with. Wonder if they regret all the shade they threw at Tarkov back when they released.

Major updates are planned for roughly every 6 months. Night Ops (0.2) came out towards the end of November, and Winds of War (0.3) will be entering limited experimental testing soon. In between that, there have been around a couple dozen other smaller patches and hotfixes mostly within the first few months of a major release, as well as plenty of community streams and updates from devs. You can view a history of all this in the Events & Announcements subforum.

For some of the announced upcoming changes in 0.3, see the newest Devlog: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/2479810/view/518583340886917214

It's a decent base for a game, but needs a couple of years of polish. Some of the reviews are justified but some are also from cod players that love sprinting around everywhere and therefor dying.

I don't know the current team lineup, but I think the issue is similar to games like DayZ. The team is probably quite small, and I assume their main priority is to keep the game as bug-free as possible before adding new content — which I can understand. They likely want to avoid a situation like DayZ: what's the point of adding a thousand new weapons if the game is broken or barely functional in many areas?

The combat outposts being added in 0.3 should help alleviate heli wait times even further. You'll be able to respawn and resupply at them. Some missions will also be available to turn in from the field, so that should help as well.

The issue for my squad is still the "Body too old" to loot problem. It's not fun to lose all of your gear just because your game crashed and you couldn't log back in before your character dies and your gear becomes unlootable. This happened to us 4 times in 2 days. My group won't return again until this issue is resolved and I recommend holding off on buying GZW until they do.

IMO, the devs are prioritizing PVP over anything else way too soon. The world, and progression of the characters and the story should be the focus and allow the PVP to develop around that foundation. I think it would draw us in and reduce the repetitive nature of GZW.

In all, GZW looked like a great game and it may be after some more time but for now, don't waste your time or money. Watch and wait to see how they progress.

The 0.2.4 patch that's in testing now will increase the reconnect grace period to 10 mins, so that should help with losing your body in that situation.

As far as "prioritizing" PvP, I would personally disagree. There are some PvP focused changes like armbands and the action zone marking in 0.3, but other changes like squads sharing task kills are still PvE focused, or just general improvements that share benefits between PvP and PvE.

I see your point and I totally get that I'm in the minority on PVP. The squad questing will be a very nice QoL feature to be sure! It's still so early in development, I'm hoping that PVE content continues to be a priority and that GZW can remain a tactical team based shooter and not devolve into another tarkov clone.

I own the most expensive edition. The supporter one. I played it enough to tell you (my opinion) that you should not buy it to have fun with it for now. Yet I do not feel any regrets as of now.

It is a true EA title. Not a finished product hiding behind the EA shield, but an alpha that is still facing heavy reformations, technical issues and serious bugs.

Along that: most weapons are not properly zeroed which leads to a guaranteed miss on longer ranges with certain weapon/scope combinations. I reported this a month ago, it’s a known issue and supposed to be fixed someday. The dev team is relatively small and the promise is big updates every 6 months.

To this day they have kept this promise of big updates. But this project is still at a very very early stage.

If you don’t have a very big tolerance for bugs and glitches. Stay away.
If you care about the technical basis of the game to work reliably so you get a reliable FPS experience. Stay away.

Buy it if you want to support the project to EVER play a game like GZW in future buy it!
Those are my honest words.

Because this is the most promising project we as consumers have in this genre. There is no game that can truly be compared to the GZW and its genre right now.

BSG (Devs of Escape from Tarkov) can’t get it done. And GZW looks very promising with all promises being kept for now.
Unlike BSG, Madfingergames does not want to drop the realistic shooter aspects of the game to satisfy streamers. Doesn’t matter if EFT ever sees its 1.0 version. It’s one of the most unrealistic shooters of the genre where a guy without a shirt on hammers you to death, in complete darkness with a welders mask on that some has a LEVEL 4 armor (will stop 5,56 AP bullets) rating. It has become a complete feverdream to satisfy the streamers. Modders may fix it, but the devs sure wont.

GZW has nothing of that nonesense. Pure hardcore promise on the shooter experience part. When its working, this is shining through and fun as hell to those that seek the challenge. Even the latest news show no signs of ever changing that. They work on quality of life features and better structures to support the gameplay but keep the core experience untouched as it should be.

There’s no way you can seriously claim this is the best milsim or extraction shooter on the market. That’s just wrong, and here’s why.

The game still suffers from poor optimization, which has been a persistent issue since launch. Weapon customization is poorly implemented, lacking logic and refinement, especially when much cheaper games—some as low as $15—do it better. The key system is another major flaw, allowing up to 45 players on a server to grab them before you, forcing players to either get lucky or rely on cooperative teammates with microphones.

The forced day/night cycle is another problem, with half the community hating it. When players bring up legitimate concerns—like not being able to complete quests—the developers dismiss them and suggest picking a server where it’s daytime or night time, even if that means dealing with 250+ ping. Instead of fixing core issues, they keep adding new weapons while the customization system remains broken and unrealistic. For a game that claims to be a realistic milsim, that’s a massive failure, especially when Escape from Tarkov does it better.

There are plenty of better options. Red River Incursion ($16.99) and Ground Branch ($29.99) offer a more polished experience despite their smaller budgets. Arma Reforger is more active than ever. If you’re looking for an extraction shooter, Hunt: Showdown is the better choice. For $70, you can access Tarkov Arena, Tarkov PvP, and Tarkov PvE, all of which provide a more refined experience. Even just buying the base version of Escape from Tarkov and playing Tarkov SPT with mods (including multiplayer mods) offers more freedom and better gameplay.

The developers just aren’t doing enough to bring players back, and I’m not the only one who feels this way. Steam discussions are flooded with similar complaints. They took my $100—good for them. I got about 30 hours out of it, so it wasn’t a total waste, but this game isn’t delivering, and there’s no way anyone can honestly say it’s the best milsim on the market. It’s just not.

I claimed that where exactly? Only thing I was pointing at is that it could be one day. And that there is no good alternative in the genre. Never said it is.

its a C tier early access game that has been behind schedule and was under developed at launch with a good 4 months now since any proper update other than still trying to figure out how to get the game to perform properly without peoples computers crashing. The concept of the game is wild and fun but with the effort ive seen i dont see this game really being a go to game for another year or even 2. That being said if you like "raw" early access games then this is your thing i guess to repetitive for me to put more than 250hrs into it since launch. Id save your money until fall and that could be a longshot still.
I actually like the game. The main issue for me is that I keep getting gpu crash dumps. It may happen within the first 15 minutes into the game or 1 hour into it. I have tried to mess with the settings and looked at my gpu usage. I am no where near maxing out my vram even at max settings. To be fair, I haven't touched this game for about 4 or 5 months. But, even then I was not close to experiencing these crashes.

Ok so, I came back after the promised fix in 2.4 and I'm quitting again. I was disconnected due to inactivity. I tried to log back in and was #1 in queue for 15 minutes. Finally got back in and my kit is gone and I dont have enough money to replace it. I wasn't killed, I was laying in a field by the LZ just waiting for dark so I could do this mission. I was disconnected and lost everything? Screw this. I am not a pvp guy and never will be. This just isn't the game for me. I'll check back in later cause I already paid for it but I wouldn't buy it again.

it has much better content and perf, as compared to launch (which was a disaster for low/mid end pcs). However depth wise, it fell quite a bit short as compared to EFT, so u might want to wait a bit before getting this game if u are looking at that (owned both games)

graphics wise, this game is definitely superior and very glad that it runs more consistent than Streets :BMW_GLASSESPUSH:

I love it, but it depends what you are looking for. I love how immersive it is, trekking through the dense jungle and doing missions at your own pace, looting and then calling extraction. It’s a neat gameplay loop in a very detailed environment.
