Gray Zone Warfare

out of video memory
so after launching the game i get an error screen saying im out of video memory (i have an rtx 2080 with 8 gbs of vram and 64 gbs of ram) if i ignore the error screen i can still open the game and play, but the game crashes just a couple minutes later. this issue is only very recent and before i was playing just fine with on average about 130 fps without ever touching the default graphics settings. is there a way i can fix this?

reduce your field of view to at most 62. what res?

This game has random spikes, and when they occur thats when you get these "memory dump triggered" / "out of video memory" events. All you can do is turn your game down. I switched from FRS to TSR, epic to medium quality. Yes, my frames have dropped from 100-120 to 40-50, but I haven't had a crash since. As a side note: another benefit I have gotten is my CPU AND GPU are less taxed (~20% utilization average) and stay significantly cooler (81*C CPU vs 92*C; 60*C GPU vs 95*C), so I am far less likely to cook my hardware.

If you got Nvidia theres a setting in NVCPL.
Go to Program Settings - GZW - CUDA Sysmem Fallback Policy - Prefer Sysmem Fallback.
This will let the RAM take over where VRAM isnt sufficient.
Some will tell you "just enable or increase pagefile", this is absolutely not true, pagefile is slower than RAM, and RAM is slower than VRAM, leaving pagefile the worst case scenario solution, even if you have the pagefile on a fast M2 NVME drive.

You can also try overclocking your GPU memory clock to see if its the speed of the VRAM thats causing errors, but most likely its the amount of VRAM, not the speed.
If you got sufficient RAM, pagefile is never necessary.
try msi afterburner i turned my gpu memory usage up get 60 fps on a 2060 super

Jesus christ, 95c on the GPU is insanely hot, sounds like you dont have good airflow and/or a bad fancurve, or even worse using the no fan speed setting that comes with newer Nvidia cards.

Yeah my GPU sits right above my PSU fan with maybe an inch of clearance. and with the way my CPU cooler is mounted, the fan blows towards the PCI guard, probably hitting the GPU in the process.

Keep in mind those were peaks, average in game was like 80-85. Here in the next few months, I'm gonna do a rebuild in a different case, different mobo, better CPU, if funds allow might even get a system that runs DDR5.

GPU fans are running nearly 100% full time. 1500 rpm average, 1700 peak

If I were you, I would go with a ATX case, a 360mm AIO and focus on good airflow.
I won't recommend any specific brand, it all comes down to preference in my opinion.
But if you cheap out on some components, you might have to upgrade more often if you want to be able to run games on decent settings, making it less cost effective in the long run.
I totally get it, PC parts can be really expensive, specially high end GPU's, pick something within your budget, but a good case is always a good place to start and will outlast any component you buy moving forward.

That is my exact plan. When I built this rig, I was upgrading from an even smaller cube style case, reused my old mini ITX / Micro ATX mobo (honestly dont remember which), upgraded the processor, added more RAM, the GPU upgrade came months after initial build after its predecessor died. The old card was more than managed in terms of heat but for some reason the AMD software kept forcing an idle fan of 0rpm and it just wouldn't trigger the fans as it started heating up, ultimately ended up cooking that card. So the build was not originally intended to be used with a 3080, it's just kind of what happened after a series of unfortunate events. Granted, after that fiasco, I am much more observant with the functionality of my machine.

Need a new GPU, only decent suggestion I can come up with. You're playing with a GPU that's on their minimum specs.

Increase page file fixes this issue also I beleive

Pagefile is the last thing you want to use, I would recommend enabling fallback to system memory if the RAM is sufficient before relying on a pagefile which is even slower than RAM.

The issue arrises when you run out of ram not vram. Buying more ram does fix the issue but increasing page file is cheapest option until the issue is fixed. Games that have a memory leak like tarkov have this issue.

Just google out of video memory and you'll see what I mean. It fixes the issue. I bought more ram but it's a waste for one game.

I mean, you're not wrong and im not trying to shut you down.
In a ideal situation VRAM should be enough, then the 2nd option is falling back on RAM, then pagefile as a last resort.
Although you're not buying more RAM just for one game, I got 64GB DDR5 and theres plenty of situations and games where having more than 32 is beneficial.

Depending on the setup, the pagefile wont help the GPU if there's no sysmem fallback in NVCPL because the pagefile is meant to serve as backup RAM, not VRAM.
Whats stored in the regular RAM is whats being pushed back to the pagefile, allowing room to push the VRAM usage to the RAM.

In short, I would force sysmen fallback policy to on in NVCPL, then increase the pagefile if you dont have any RAM headroom.

Kinda like putting your wife in the back of the car because she needs more than one seat and you wanna make room for your sidechick who looks better through the windshield.
