It only works for general gameplay and not the UI/Inventory.
I know Madfingers have said they will look into adding in support for controllers at a later date, or when(if) they move to consoles. However, I can't ever see that happening, as the UI/Inventory alone looks too complex for controller support. I could be incorrect, but from the gameplay/streams that I've seen, I'm not sure how well it would work.
I use Steam's controller customization, in every game I play.
I've currently got 15 hours into customizing mine for GZ, and it's 99% complete, but very complex.
I use a DS4, though, and it's overclocked to a 1000 polling rate, with a layer action so when I press L2, I have a slowdown for fine control while ADS. XBOX controllers cannot be overclocked. So sensitivities, need to be set to 4x what a Playstation controller can do.
Default polling rate for controllers is 250.
I will be making a guide for Gray Zone when I complete this, but for now, if you want to tackle your own customization for an XBOX controller, then my controller guide for Battlebit Remastered should help you get an idea of what can be accomplished. As that config has a double mapping for every action in the game.

Have you ever tried day z with an Xbox pad?. It's an absolute nightmare ish mess from hell. Not saying mfg couldn't sort something out for gzw but you just made me think of my brief experience of day z with an Xbox pad 😆
I have actually played it with a pad and it's a royal pain in the ****!
What has Aim Assist got to do with controller support? Adding controller support brings in more players. You don't need to have Aim Assist in the game, RB6 and PUBG doesn't have Aim Assist in the game, PUBG doesn't even have it on consoles.
Hell Let Loose (my most played game) doesn't have AA on PC, and I appreciate the devs keeping their promise to never add it to the PC version of the game.
@sicknote I have a friend who plays DayZ, and I setup a config for him to use. Once you understand the confiugurator and what each function controls, it's pretty easy to dial it in.
Gray Zone has some very weird mechanics, compared to other games I've played, so this one has taken me a very long time to work out the kinks.
When I started playing Hell Let loose, I spent over 100 hours dialing it in. Gray Zone is turning out to be the same situation though. As there is only so many buttons that can be mapped.
I also use a chat pad though, so I can add extra inputs if necessary.
It would help alot in GZ if they opened up the category to the right in the keybindings, that lets me select Pressed or Toggle etc.
that is why you design a separate UI/UX for gamepad input.
Steam is native controller support. There is already many configs, including all my mishap configs when sharing with friends.
Native controller support in UE, means 2 things. either the dev put in the basic allowance, or they spent time working out the kinks.
To this day in Hell Let Loose, it has what's called partial controller support. Meaning the most basic allowances are used, not just with layout, but sensitivities, stick curves, etc.
Hell Let Loose's in-game config is so bad, that you can't setup a config that allows for close combat and long combat. It's one or the other.
They added acceleration to help with this, but any controller player knows that acceleration is useless for muscle memory.
Try out my guide but set it up for GZ. I go through the settings in detail, so the user understands why these adjustments are made.
Maybe start with other games you have first, like a basic game of sorts to get the feel of it.
True :)
Only the fact that 90% of games that use controller have a massive aim assist.... you want controller play, go play CoD.
Real PC games and real PC gamers use mouse and keyboard. True lots of ppl want the controller, but how many of you will use it if there is not an aim assist for you?
