No, it's not hard to get a gun. Just walk into any town and take one from the many downed AI people leave littered everywhere. Money is as hard to gain as you make it to be. Selling guns isn't a lucrative business venture, but it sure is easy.
Not sure how available high end gear is in the game, I haven't gotten that far yet.
-You can swap between PvPve and PvE mode anytime you want. Want to 'relax' and play with friends to accrue equipment/money/do quests? Swap over to PvPvE mode and vice versa whenever you want.
-For my first run; I went out with only a knife, pistol and three mags.(Along with my full armor/backpack loadout) First NPC I came across, we traded shots and I kept landing my softpoint 9mm into his damn armor plates, ran out of ammo; had to Rambo my way over to him and then rush him with my knife as he was reloading. Gutted that ♥♥♥♥♥♥ like a fish(he tried to run), took all his gear, went back to town, sold it and then went back out with my standard kit and had fun.
The grind is only as much as you want there to be; but you can always find guns/ammo/supplies on dead bodies and in buildings. Run missions for money/rewards aswell. I'll suggest this, always bring back ammo/food/mags/etc to sell; always go back fully loaded and sell off what you don't need; and the 'grind' really just kinda disappears as you start to look at it as 'resource acquisition runs' more than 'grinding'.
