I 100% agree with your comment about needing more time in the oven. It's shocking how many games I've seen release just 6 months too early and die because of it. I would imagine the CEO or whoever was responsible for releasing the game has a lot of yes men surrounding him or the studio was in financial trouble and they needed a surge of income.
That is what made me request refund right now.

Charging money to play test is ethically wrong. There should be a lawsuit against this behavior. It's only going to get worse as players keep forking over money blindly and then justifying it by saying "it's early access!"
