You need to cache the shaders
In my first game I was at 20fps, took a heli to the town, looked about a bit, then came back to base and restarted the game, now I'm on 60-70fps without any settings changed.

That's on 4k, everything on medium, FSR on with frame-gen (the input lag really isn't too bad with this game). It's not perfect, but for an early access game it's definitely playable, I've just done the first ten or so missions solo with this.

PC Specs:
RTX 3080
Ryzen 9 5900X
32GB RAM

I think a lot of people are loading into the game for the first time, having the horrible performance you get then, and then writing the game off. Just give it some time to sort itself out!

This is 100% correct. Unlike COD, where shader caching is done while in the menu, this game has dynamic shader caching, which is done during gameplay. Every time you go to a new area the first time the performance takes a big hit because shaders are not cached for that area yet. When you go back to that area the next time it will be a lot smoother. I'd prefer to preload shader cache t.b.h. as it kind of breaks the gameplay in its current unoptimized form. The downside is that with each update you could be spending 30 minutes waiting for shader cache to complete before you can actually start playing, but that's just a matter of booting the game up half an hour before you intend to play.
