I don't really bother with AK builds, but with the little I messed with them, different bodies require different parts, rails, stocks and mounts. Sometimes parts have to be put on a certain way too. For example, you have to drag a barrel onto an upper and not the upper onto a barrel or it just won't go together.
M4s are a bit easier to build than AKs, but I prefer M4s over AKs anyway.
Once you understand the basics, you'll be able to customize weapons to your liking. Once you part together a few guns, buildings guns get's easier. It's really best just doing trial and error.
Start with an AKM (since they are cheap) and go from there. You basically grab a part and if your gun shows yellow, it means it will fit. If you want to attach grips you need a moe handguard or something with RIS on. With MOE handguards you need a part (it's called mo something and has 1-9 in the name) that lets you attach the grip, with ris it just slides on. If you want to put a sight on you need a picatinny rail or side mount. With muzzle devices you just put them on, unless you use a suppressor on an AR. It requires a muzzle break, then a suppressor.
With pistol grips they just click straight on, same with some stocks (some require buffertube and buffermount and some require PT stock adaptor and PT stock).
You sometimes need to add an extra rail device on the picatinny rail to add certian scopes like the T500 scope (I think that's the name). So first buy the extra rail and then drag a scope over to see if it will go on to the rail.
You can check if they will fit on your gun without buying the items, you just need to press X in the basket to get rid of it.
(Hopefully this made some sense, it's easier to do, than explain).
I always use AKM's and AK 74's, they are easier to put together than the M4 and CQ A1 as you don't really need extra parts unless using American sights on your AK.
