GTA:O is 50 km² for 30/100(RP) players and infinit NPCs.
42km² of Minecraft world can eat, i don't know, 500 players?
Its depends on level design, dayz has all m² in single plane, rust in underground/above ground monuments, gta:o in indoor spaces behind loading screens. Minecraft can have like 85 - 3m height planes+sky for flying.
Map doesn't need to be square it can be long with single entry/exit point areas.
With right sound occlusion it would be easy to get lost in jungle/city environment.
Hope this helps :)
Of course everything could change during balance phase and during EA , based on your comments.
So, 42km² isnt that much in my book.
